Sergio Canales? 'No!' says Wenger

Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger has refuted suggestions that the Gunners are ready to go head-to-head with Real Madrid for Racing Santander youngster Sergio Canales.

Reports in both the Spanish and British media had claimed that the north London outfit would make a January move for a player dubbed the ‘next Cesc Fabregas.’ Canales has been an important part of the Santander set up this season, putting in several influential performances despite being only 18-years-old.

Asked about a move for Canales in his weekly press conference ahead of Arsenal’s away fixture with Bolton Wanderers, Wenger stated emphatically that he had 'no,' interest in the player.

Last week Canales himself stressed to Marca that he was happy plying his trade in Spain:

“Right now my preference is for Racing. They are the ones who have given me the confidence to play and make my debut at 18-years-old. Without ruling out anything, in the situation that I am in, I’m happy here,”

Since the start of January Wenger has also ruled out moves for Carlton Cole, Klaas-Jan Huntelaar, Victor Moses, Marouane Chamakh and Edin Dzeko. The French coach did confirm that Sol Campbell would put pen-to-paper this afternoon on a short-term deal which would keep the centre-back at Arsenal until the end of the season.

Werder: No bids yet lodged for Ozil

Werder Bremen have released a statement denying that a bid has been lodged by Serie A giants Juventus for German playmaker Mesut Ozil. Last week it was reported that the Bundesliga side had set their prized asset an ultimatum as negotiations over a new appeared to stall. Arsenal are thought to be the other major suitors for the diminutive playmaker who is tipped to be a star of the World Cup.

A statement from Werder Bremen, relayed through the AFP news agency states made clear that the Turin outfit had made no €8 million bid, as reported in the Italian press.

“We have received no offer from Juventus.”

Worried that the player could leave the club on a free, general manager Klaus Allofs has made that the German international should declare his intentions.

The diminutive playmaker recently broke into the German national team and has been instrumental in helping Joachim Loew’s side to next year’s World Cup.

With his current contract set to end in 18 months, and with the prospect of being able to sign a pre-contract agreement in the aftermath of a possible starring role at this summer’s showpiece international tournament, it is understood that Ozil is deliberately stalling on a new four year offer from his current contractors.

"In the course of the next few months we need to hold discussions. We cannot simply allow him to go free in the last year of his contract,“ said Allofs at Werder’s winter training camp in Dubai.

Gunners boss Arsene Wenger is thought to be one of several top European coaches interested in recruiting a player labeled the ‘new Stefan Effenberg’ in certain quarters of the press.

With defence unlocking passes in his locker, combative tackling and a dynamic and determined dribbler, Ozil has been deemed to possess similar qualities to current Arsenal captain Cesc Fabregas and could be the ideal replacement for the Spaniard should he quit the Emirates for a return to La Liga at the end of the season.

Arsenal sign Bolivian midfielder Samuel Galindo

• Arsène Wenger will send £500,000 signing to Spain on loan
• 'He has good vision and we like that here'

The Arsenal manager, Arsène Wenger, has signed the 17-year-old Bolivian midfield prospect Samuel Galindo, although he will send him straight out on loan to Spain, as he once did with Carlos Vela, in order for him to secure a work permit.

It is likely that Arsenal will have to pay compensation of £500,000 to Galindo's club, Real America.

"He is a player who has good technique," said Wenger. "He's intelligent, 6ft 2in, left-footed and that's plenty of qualities. He also has good stamina and can give good balls, he has good vision and we like that here.

"It's true that he was at Everton but he was offered to come to me on trial. I said yes, I liked what I saw and I signed him."

Wenger on verge of coup for Cesar

Cesar+Azpilicueta.jpg

Arsenal came very close to making a move for Osasuna right-back Cesar Azpilicueta: a key player in the Spanish Under-21s and one who is being monitored by all the big clubs in La Liga.

Arsene Wenger was willing to pay £6million for the highly rated 20-year-old but, with a £12m buy-out clause, the Osasuna president pulled out of a deal that would have been hugely unpopular ahead of the club's elections.

Meanwhile, Atletico Madrid are already counting upon Fran Merida for next season, despite the fact that Wenger says he will be disappointed if the 19-year-old returns to Spain.

The player has been linked with a move away for some time, but unless he gets more playing time at the Emirates and the promise of a greater level of trust in him fails to materialise, it is highly likely he’ll be playing somewhere else next season.
