Arsenal prepare £9m move for West Ham striker Carlton Cole

January 06, 2010 Transfer gossip

Arsenal are set to take advantage of West Ham’s financial problems by securing the signing of striker Carlton Cole in the January transfer window, according to a report in The Sun this morning.

Mark Irwin claims that Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger will launch the bid for Cole if Nicklas Bendtner fails a fitness test on Friday.

Cole would provide physical presence up front at Arsenal and would be a natural replacement for the injured Robin van Persie .

The former Chelsea striker would be eligible for the Champions League and West Ham are not in a position to refuse a large offer from the Gunners.

Carlton Cole, 26, is currently sidelined with a knee injury but has been in impressive form for the Hammers this season, scoring seven goals in 13 Premier League appearances.

Arsenal boss Arsene Wenger said in his press conference ahead of the match with Bolton tonight: "There is no way we can carry on with only one striker. Bendtner is being treated now and will come back on Friday for tests. If he is out For another two months, we will need to buy someone, absolutely."

Wenger added: “There is a 50-50 chance we'll sign somebody. Even if Bendtner is OK we will look around and if we find a good bargain we will still do it."
