Ada Bom di Sri Petaling?

KUALA LUMPUR: A Bomb Disposal Unit destroyed a suspicious box in Sri Petaling today before several boxes of colourful Lego-like building blocks were found inside.

Kuala Lumpur police chief Datuk Fadil Marsus said police were alerted to the box, which had been left in front of a shop, at 12.57pm by a 33-year-old woman.

He said preliminary checks initially detected relatively high radiation readings from the object, prompting the deployment of several specialist units to the scene.

"The Kuala Lumpur police Bomb Disposal Unit, Bukit Aman's Chemical, Biological, Radiological, Nuclear and Explosives (CBRNE) Unit and the Malaysian Nuclear Agency were subsequently called in to conduct further checks and assessments.

"The Bomb Disposal Unit then used a Recoilless Disruptor 5.0 to destroy the suspected object," he said in a statement today.

He said that following the action, several boxes suspected to contain colourful Lego-like building blocks were found inside the box.

Fadil said subsequent checks by the Atomic Energy Department later confirmed that no radioactive readings were detected at the scene.

"We have opened an investigation paper under Section 506 of the Penal Code for criminal intimidation," he said.

Brickfields police chief Assistant Commissioner Hoo Chang Hook arrived at the scene shortly after police received information on the incident and monitored the situation there.

Videos and photographs on social media showed a section of the busy Sri Petaling commercial area cordoned off with police tape, with emergency personnel at the scene.

Footage showed police vehicles and Fire and Rescue Department personnel at the location, while members of the public watched the operation from outside the cordoned-off area.

Social media posts had initially described the incident as a bomb threat, with one user claiming that the Bomb Disposal Unit had been deployed.

Another post later claimed that the object had been detonated without any casualties.
