Study reveals which apps to delete to boost your handset's speed
10 August 2017
If your Android is slow, eats through mobile data or frequently runs out of storage space, it could be time to delete some of your apps. Mobile apps use up digital resources even when they're not in use, and could slow down the performance of your phone.
This image shows the top 10 performance-draining apps that run at start-up on Android phones. If you rarely use them, deleting some of these apps could help speed up your phone if it is running slowly
The report, from cyber security firm Avast, based in Prague, found that Google's own apps are among the worst offenders. Google Maps, Google Play Music, Google Plus and Google Hangouts all appear in the list of top 10 'greediest' apps that drain performance.
Many of these apps come pre-installed on Android devices and launch automatically when your phone is turned on. They then run in the background even when you aren't using them.
Other pre-installed apps found to be a big drain on smartphone performance include several provided by Samsung, such as AllShare, ChatON and Push Service. Researchers found that Google Docs and Text-to-Speech are among the greediest, along with Samsung WatchON, Video Editor and Media Hub.
As well as apps that run as soon as the phone is switched on, the researchers also looked at which apps run by users drain performance most (pictured). Many of the apps are made by Samsung and Google and come pre-installed on Android devices
Chat apps including WhatsApp, WeChat and Snapchat are heavy battery drainers, as are streaming apps like Netflix and Spotify.
Instagram, Facebook Messenger and Snapchat all take up a lot of storage space, as do text-heavy applications like Amazon Kindle and the BBC News app.
Avast found that web browsers like Chrome, Firefox and Microsoft Outlook also have a big impact on mobile data.
