The euro tumbled on news that France lost its triple-A credit rating. Moody’s downgraded France’s government bond rating by one notch to AA1 from AAA and retained a negative outlook.

This was a blow to the single currency which had rallied to its highest level in two weeks on Monday, lifted by optimism that Greece will receive more funding.

EURUSD opened in Asia at $1.2812 and dropped to $1.2764 on the Moody’s announcement before being rebid to $1.2810. The upcoming Eurogroup meeting later today will help support euro if there is an agreement on releasing aid to Greece.

Euro zone finance ministers will give a tentative go-ahead for the disbursement of 44 billion euros in financial aid to Greece, with the funds expected to be paid on December 5 if the country meets all remaining conditions.

Sterling fell alongside euro after the Moody’s downgrade but soon was able to advance higher. GBPUSD fell early to a session low of $1.5891 before bouncing to $1.5918.

Yen came under pressure again after the Bank of Japan held off new easing measures at its policy meeting today. However the BOJ statement which warned over Japan’s slowing economy, hinted at further action at its next meeting. Meanwhile, Japan’ s opposition party LDP is eyeing changes to the BOJ law if it wins the elections in December. The Party leader Shinzo Abe is a strong proponent of further monetary easing.

USDJPY moved off a session low of 81.13 to climb back above 81.23.

Aussie maintained a gain from yesterday even after the Reserve Bank of Australia policy meeting minutes suggested more scope for further easing. In the last rate fix on November 6 the RBA left unchanged its overnight cash rate target at 3.25 percent.

Australia remains one of the few countries with triple-A credit rating in tact and this is supportive for the currency, especially after France lost its AAA rating today. AUDUSD traded between $1.0394 and $1.0423.
