What is importance of pips?

A pip is a standardized unit measuring a change (both gains and losses) of a currency pair in the forex market. It is the smallest increment in the value of an exchange rate between a currency pair.

It's difficult to make a profit in the foreign currency (FX) market. Pips aren't to be taken lightly. The basic movement a currency pair might make in the market is represented by a pip, which stands for either "percentage in point" or "price interest point." A pip is equivalent to 1/100 of a percentage point, or one basis point, in most currency pairs, such as the British pound/US dollar (GBP/USD), and pips are tallied in the fourth place after the decimal in price quotes. A pip is one percentage point in currency pairs involving the Japanese yen, and pips are counted after the decimal in price quotes.

To facilitate international trade and business, currencies must be exchanged. Such transactions, as well as wagers made by speculators hoping to profit from price movements in pairs of currencies, take place in the currency market. Pips are used to calculate the rates that forex market players pay when trading currencies.

Points (percentage of pips) are used to calculate the rate that traders in the Forex market will pay. The value depends on the lot size you are trading (eg 1,000 vs 100,000 units). The currency used to open the account determines the pip value.

The change in pips helps traders estimate the profit or loss of trades. Also, the pip size also affects how much money a trader makes or loses on each change in the quote depending on the trade volume (lot).
