What is Exponential Moving Average?

The Exponential Moving Average (EMA) differs from the Simple Moving Average (SMA) by giving more weight to recent prices, making it more responsive to market changes. For instance, to calculate a 5-day SMA, you sum the closing prices of five days and divide by five, smoothing price trends effectively.

There are also strategies based on the intersection of two EMAs with different periods, where such an intersection indicates a trend change. However, during prolonged ranges or flats, such intersections are not uncommon and can generate many false signals. Therefore, it is better to use larger timeframes for analysis.
