West Sumatra pushes faster recovery after floods, landslides

Padang, West Sumatra (ANTARA) - West Sumatra will work with the central government to accelerate the repair of infrastructure damaged by recent floods and landslides, Governor Mahyeldi said on Wednesday.

"Bridges, houses, roads, and other damaged infrastructure will, God willing, be handled together," he said.

He noted that the recovery plan aligns with directives from President Prabowo Subianto, who visited flood-hit areas in Padang Pariaman on December 1, emphasizing joint efforts to expedite disaster handling.

Mahyeldi said provincial and local governments cannot shoulder the recovery alone, given the scale and severity of the damage, and stressed the need for coordinated action.

At least 16 provincial road segments were damaged after floods and landslides struck areas beginning November 21, including collapsed surfaces, eroded shoulders, landslides, severely damaged bridges, and blocked road sections.

Provincial mapping identified 54 affected points, consisting of damaged roads, eroded shoulders, landslide areas, damaged bridges, and routes obstructed by fallen trees.

Mahyeldi urged survivors across districts and cities to remain resilient and optimistic during the recovery process.

He added that the government continues to distribute logistics, medicines, and medical services.

Mahyeldi also expressed gratitude to Coordinating Minister for Political and Security Affairs Djamari Chaniago for delivering assistance, particularly to flood survivors in Pauah Subdistrict, Padang City.

"The minister's aid brings comfort and relief to the community here," the governor said.
