Kleber hands Porto victory

Hulk made up for missing a penalty to score a vicious free-kick as Porto came from behind to launch their Champions League campaign with victory over Shakhtar Donetsk in Group G.

The Brazilian hit the bar before seeing his spot-kick come back off the post, only for the Ukrainian champions to take the lead when Adriano pounced on an awful error by Porto goalkeeper Helton.

However, Hulk made amends when he sent an unstoppable shot past Olexandr Rybka with a little under half-an-hour gone.

Pinheiro Kleber then tapped home in the second half in a match which saw Shakhtar finish with nine men, Yaroslav Rakitskiy and Dimitro Chygrynskiy both given their marching orders.

Porto almost made the breakthrough in the fifth minute when Hulk curled a 25-yard shot from the right wing which took a deflection and hit the bar before going over with Rybka stranded.

The hosts then squandered a golden chance to take the lead in the 11th minute when they were awarded a penalty for a foul on James Rodriguez. The midfielder had made his way into the area, playing a short ball to Hulk.

However, as he went to receive the return pass from his team-mate, he was impeded by Rakitskiy and the referee had no hesitation in pointing to the spot. Hulk sent the goalkeeper the wrong way but the ball hit the post.

Porto were punished two minutes later when the visitors went ahead following a woeful mistake by Helton in the Porto goal. Willian fired in a shot which the keeper should have routinely gathered but the ball spilled from his grasp and Adriano pounced to tap home.

With Helton looking uncertain, Porto appeared to be losing the initiative before a thunderbolt from Hulk brought them level in the 28th minute.

The Brazilian lined up a free-kick in a central position from 35 yards and unleashed a vicious shot which moved in the air with goalkeeper Rybka unable to prevent it going into the net despite getting both hands to the ball.

Moments later Porto appeared to have a valid shout for another penalty when Hulk got beyond the defender Henrikh Mkhitaryan and seemed to have been bundled over but nothing was given despite strong appeals.

He then produced another long-range shot which Rybka beat out as the hosts upped the tempo.

Shakhtar's task grew harder when they were reduced to 10 men five minutes before the break when Rakitskiy was shown a straight red card for a lunge on Joao Moutinho.

The hosts then took the lead for the first time in the game six minutes into the second half. Rodriguez got ahead of the defence on the left wing before cutting a low cross back across the face of goal and Pinheiro Kleber had the simple task of tapping the ball home.

Chygrynskiy was then sent off for his second bookable offence 10 minutes from time to complete a miserable night for Shakhtar.

Al Nicosia 2 - 1 Zenit

Manduca and Ailton on target

Apoel Nicosia scored twice in three second-half minutes to come from behind against Zenit St Petersburg and open Champions League Group G with a deserved win tonight.

Gustavo Manduca scored one and created the 75th-minute winner for Ailton as the hosts recovered from conceding to Konstatin Zyryanov against the run of play.

Zenit were dealt another setback when Bruno Alves was sent off for a second yellow card with 14 minutes to go, but they piled on late pressure and might have snatched a point had Viktor Fayzulin's shot gone in rather than hit the bar.

The hosts were the first to threaten when Zenit goalkeeper Vyacheslav Malafeev was forced to punch clear Marcinho's cross.

Malafeev then parried Ailton's shot from 12 yards as another of Apoel's Brazilian contingent tried his luck.

The Russian stopper was keeping his side on level terms and denied Ivan Trickovski minutes later.

Zenit finally got going, though, and Nicolas Lombaerts headed Roman Shirokov's left-wing cross wide at the far post.

But that was a rare moment of adventure for the visitors and Trickovski drilled an effort wide from the edge of the area at the other end.

The Cypriots continued to dominate after the break and the lively Trickovski had another shot parried by the over-worked Malafeev.

Marcinho then fired over the top from long range before Ailton headed over from a Trickovski ball in. But Zenit went in front completely against the run of play in the 63rd minute.

Danny played the ball in from the right and Zyryanov guided a low finish into the bottom right corner. Suddenly Zenit were the side making all the running, Alexander Kerzhakov twice mis-hitting shots wide in quick succession and Danny having an effort blocked by defender Paulo Jorge.

But within the space of three minutes Apoel had turned the game on its head.

Manduca volleyed home a 73rd-minute equaliser from the left of the area before setting up Ailton to curl a second low inside the far post from 18 yards.

And things went from bad to worse for Zenit a minute later when Alves fouled Ailton and was shown a second yellow card.

The Russians poured forward in search of an equaliser in the closing stages with Danny seeing a shot saved by Dionisis Chiotis and Viktor Fayzulin crashing a shot against the bar. Fayzulin then crossed for Lombaerts who headed wide as Apoel held on for an important win.

Viktoria Plzen 1 - 1 BATE Borisov

Bressan thwarts Plzen

Renan Bressan's strike denied Plzen a victory as they had to be content with a point in their Champions League debut against BATE Borisov.

The Czech side looked set for a dream start to life among Europe's elite when Marek Bakos, who scored six in qualifying, put them ahead on the stroke of half-time.

But Bressan latched on to Filipp Rudik's pass 21 minutes from the end to ensure the spoils were shared in Prague.

Plzen were immediately looking at home and they were first to threaten when David Bystron headed Pavel Horvath's corner over the bar.

At the other end, Dmitri Baga curled the ball towards goal but it was an easy save for Marek Cech.

BATE goalkeeper Aleksandr Gutor was given an uncomfortable moment when a free-kick from Bakos struck the wall and headed dangerously towards goal, but he recovered to save.

Gutor was in the action again after 15 minutes when he made a good low stop to deny Daniel Kolar.

Rudik's shot never looked like worrying Cech as it soared over the bar three minutes later, while Mateja Kezman fired wide from the left channel.

BATE were on top now and they rained shots in on goal, Edgar Olekhnovich shooting over and Kezman finding the side netting.

But Plzen, who were dominating the possession without turning it into chances, took the lead on the stroke of half-time when Petr Jiracek's low cross found Bakos, who tapped home.

Pavel Horvath tried his luck with an ambitious effort from distance two minutes after the restart and came close to doubling his side's lead as it went narrowly wide.

Kezman's snapshot two minutes before the hour mark went wide, and a minute later he had the ball in the back of the net but was denied by the offside flag.

Gutor kept his side in the game after 62 minutes when he saved from Vaclav Pilar.

And that proved crucial when Bressan ran on to Rudik's sliderule pass and slid the ball between the legs of Cech.

The game fizzled out somewhat thereafter as both sides seemed content to settle for a point.

Borussia Dortmund 1 - 1 Arsenal

Perisic denies Gunners

Arsenal were denied a victory in their Champions League encounter at Borussia Dortmund as an exquisite volley from substitute Ivan Perisic secured a last-gasp draw.

With manager Arsene Wenger forced to watch from the stands due to a touchline ban, it looked as if Robin van Persie had snatched the Gunners an unlikely victory in Germany.

Having withstood a barrage of first-half attacks, the Holland international latched onto Theo Walcott's through ball to fire home three minutes before the break.

However, Dortmund continued to dominate in the second period with their brand of free-flowing football and their tactics paid dividend with just two minutes remaining.

The ball broke free to Perisic on the edge of the box and the summer signing unleashed a superb volley to equalise, much to the delight of the raucous home support who were watching their side in Champions League action for the first time in nine years.

Heading into the Group F clash, Yossi Benayoun was handed his first Arsenal start.

The on-loan Chelsea midfielder was one of three changes to the side that defeated Swansea 1-0 at the weekend, with Alex Song and Gervinho coming in for Andrey Arshavin and the injured Aaron Ramsey.

Dortmund welcomed back skipper Sebastian Kehl and 19-year-old Germany midfielder Mario Gotze after the weekend's 2-1 home defeat by Hertha Berlin, with Ilkay Gundogan and Jakub Blaszczykowski dropping to the bench.

The visitors were met by a wall of sound as they walked onto the field in Dortmund but were not put off as they attacked the famous Sudtribune.

Van Persie saw a shot blocked in the fifth minute and when the ball broke to Gervinho in the resulting play he forced Roman Weidenfeller into action.

However, Dortmund looked dangerous with their free-flowing 4-2-3-1 formation and would have netted immediately afterwards if Kevin Grosskreutz had shown a bit more composure in front of goal.

Shinji Kagawa was the next to get a shot away four minutes later, although he too blazed over the bar.

Arsenal's defence was living a charmed life as Dortmund continued to attack and only a goal-line clearance from Bacary Sagna thwarted Robert Lewandowski after he had rounded goalkeeper Wojciech Szczesny.

The Gunners looked to have weathered the storm as they began to establish a larger proportion of possession but Gotze showed his undoubted talent turning a Mikel Arteta corner into an attack that ended in Grosskreutz putting over.

Arsenal's indifferent start almost got worse when Laurent Koscielny clashed heads with Mats Hummels, although the centre-back was patched up and able to continue.

While the home side were dominating proceedings, the north Londoners were looking dangerous in their fleeting attacks and Weidenfeller was forced to save well when Van Persie broke free.

The Holland international was not be denied for long and, after winning possession on the halfway line, he ran onto a Walcott ball to fire past Weidenfeller.

Despite the visitors taking the lead, Dortmund stuck with their plan in the second period and continued to knock the ball around nicely.

Arsenal sat deep and soaked up the pressure with aplomb, although Marcel Schmelzer came agonisingly close with a drive in the 55th minute after ghosting down the left flank.

Gervinho managed to eke out an opportunity for the Gunners but they were forced to withstand an increasing number of attacks as the half wore on.

Only misplaced passing and finishing were costing Jurgen Klopp's side dear at goalscoring opportunities, much to the manager's visible displeasure.

With less than 15 minutes remaining, Arsenal brought on Emmanuel Frimpong for Walcott in a bid to shore things up as they strained to keep Dortmund at bay.

Szczesny did well to prevent Neven Subotic scoring from close range when the Serbian defender latched onto a Gotze corner in the 82nd minute. Gotze screwed wide moments later as Dortmund pressed for an equaliser, which came in the 88th minute through Perisic's wonder goal.

The ball fell kindly to the substitute from a corner and he unleashed a volley that rifled into the top right-hand corner with two minutes remaining. Dortmund pressed for the winner in the dying minutes, although resolute defending kept the scores level.

Olympiakos 0 - 1 Marseille

Lucho lifts L'OM

Marseille put their disappointing domestic form behind them to claim their first win of the season at Olympiakos.

OM have managed just three draws from their opening five Ligue 1 fixtures but Lucho Gonzalez's second-half strike gave them a deserved victory in this Champions League Group F encounter in Piraeus.

The French side had the better chances throughout and were unlucky not to be ahead by half-time after Loic Remy hit the post.

The only downside for Didier Deschamps was seeing defender Rod Fanni dismissed late on.

Indeed, the visitors could have taken the lead as early as the second minute when Benoit Cheyrou's corner was flicked on by Djimi Traore but Souleymane Diawara could not keep his header down.

Cheyrou tried his luck from distance after 15 minutes but the save was an easy one for Franco Costanzo.

In the 19th minute Kevin Mirallas got a shot in on goal after good interplay with Jose Holebas but Marseille goalkeeper Steve Mandanda turned the ball behind.

Olympiakos were threatening now and Mirallas should have done better with his shot a minute later when Ljubomir Fejsa's tenacity presented him with an opportunity.

It continued to be the French side who created the better chances though and Jeremy Morel's 20-yard strike drew a save from Costanzo in the 23rd minute.

And two minutes later the dangerous Cheyrou picked out Morgan Amalfitano who could not find the target.

Marseille were getting closer and closer, Cheyrou heading Morel's cross fractionally over the bar in the 35th minute.

And Remy was left to rue his luck two minutes later as he came inside and unleashed a shot which struck the post with Costanzo beaten.

Six minutes before the break Mirallas did well to beat two Marseille players but his shot did not match his skill and it presented Mandanda with a comfortable save.

Marseille took a deserved lead six minutes after the restart.

Morel did well down the left flank, beating Vasilis Torosidis and crossing for Gonzalez, who prodded home from close range.

Cheyrou continued to be a thorn in the side of the Greeks and his 30-yard effort in the 62nd minute was touched over by Costanzo.

The hosts rarely looked like levelling.

Jose Holebas saw his free-kick deflected over after 72 minutes, while Rafik Djebbour could not find the target from 12 yards after an inviting cross from Torosidis three minutes later, but chances were at a premium.

Substitute Fanni, who only made his entrance nine minute from the end, saw red for a late challenge on Mirallas in stoppage time, but it was too late for Olympiakos to take advantage.

And with Arsenal drawing at Borussia Dortmund, it put Marseille top of the group after one round of matches.
