Jermain Defoe aiming high
Jermain Defoe has set himself lofty goalscoring targets at Tottenham Hotspur and the striker believes the club's ambitions are also continuing to grow.
Defoe returned from a two-month absence due to injury in last weekend's 3-2 win at Arsenal - their first away from home in the North London derby in over 17 years - and also played in Wednesday's victory over Werder Bremen as Spurs reached the knockout stages of the Champions League for the first time.
Manager Harry Redknapp has spoken of his belief that the club will be capable of challenging for the title within two years, and as he targets further goalscoring success at White Hart Lane, Defoe appears equally convinced that the club are progressing.
"I am seven goals off 100 for Spurs," Defoe told the Daily Mirror, "Once I reach that milestone I will be in the club's top 13 goal scorers. But I want to be in the top five. If I can score a minimum of 30 goals over the next season and a half that might be a start.
"People think these things are a pressure, but that kind of pressure is what I live for. I was in a private box at the ground on the night of our Champions League win over Inter Milan, watching the lads doing a magnificent job for the club.
"Now I want to join them. I've played at the highest level for my country, at the World Cup. Now I want to reach those heights with my club. The more I can do the business for the club, the longer we can stay in the competition. That's all the incentive any of us need.
"As for the title race ... Well, I have to be honest, the manager has always told us that he sees no reason why we can't win the title within the next two seasons. That's the belief he has in us.
"Last season, we showed we are not afraid of anyone by beating Arsenal, Chelsea and Liverpool. Everybody said that after all the investment into the Manchester City side they would get into the top four ahead of us but we beat them to that as well.
"This season we have already beaten Arsenal and we are slowly beginning to cope with maintaining our form in the Champions League and the Premier League."
Meanwhile, Spurs defender Ledley King will see a specialist on Monday in a bid to ascertain whether he requires surgery to correct his troublesome groin problem.
"He's off to see a specialist in Copenhagen to get a decision on what needs doing next, as to whether he feels he can carry on strengthening and trying to get through without having surgery or whether he needs surgery," Redknapp said.
However, fellow defender Michael Dawson has returned to training for the first time since September 3 after recovering from a knee injury.
