Bale bags two goals in Spurs win

Tottenham cruised to their first league win in five games thanks to another impressive performance from two-goal Gareth Bale.

Bale put Spurs in front with a header in the 16th minute and after Roman Pavlyuchenko had missed a penalty, he made amends by heading the second four minutes before the interval.

Peter Crouch added a third in the 68th minute before Bale scored his second of the game from a cross by Alan Hutton.

Blackburn rallied too late with goals from Ryan Nelsen in the 79th minute and a Gael Givet effort in the closing stages.

The home side had dominated the early stages of the game took the lead with their first real chance. A corner on the right from Rafael van der Vaart in the 16th minute was firmly headed home at the near post by man of the moment Bale. The header, into the roof of the net, gave former Tottenham goalkeeper Paul Robinson little chance.

Blackburn responded in the 22nd minute with a curling shot from Brett Emerton which was tipped around the post by Tottenham keeper Heurelho Gomes.

Tottenham were denied a penalty in the 24th minute when Luka Modric was upended in the box but referee Andre Marriner booked the Spurs midfielder for diving.

In the 28th minute, Tottenham should have increased their lead but after latching on to a bad backpass by Phil Jones, Pavlyuchenko sent his shot over the bar with only Robinson to beat.

Spurs were awarded a penalty in the 31st minute when Robinson was adjudged to have brought down Crouch - but Pavlyuchenko's afternoon got worse when he sent his spot-kick wide of Robinson's right-hand post.

Blackburn made a change in the 35th minute when Michel Salgado was replaced by El-Hadji Diouf.

Gomes pulled off a smart double save in the 38th minute to deny Nikola Kalinic and then Emerton, before Pavlyuchenko - a constant threat to Rovers - he forced Robinson into another good save before making it 2-0 in the 41st minute.

A typical Bale run down the left was followed by a cross to the far post, where Pavlyuchenko rose unmarked to head home.

Blackburn replaced Kalinic with Jason Roberts at half-time but Tottenham continued to dominate the game, although their first real chance of the second half came on the hour when Bale's cross fell on to the bar.

Moments later, Robinson foiled Modric when the Spurs midfielder tried his luck from the edge of the penalty area.

But Spurs had William Gallas to thank in the 61st minute when he cleared a shot from Morten Gamst Pedersen off the line. It was the Blackburn striker's last act of the game as he was replaced seconds later to be replaced by Dunn.

Gomes saved Spurs again in the 66th minute when he produced a fine stop to deny Diouf. But Spurs made it three in the 68th minute after Robinson had saved Pavlyuchenko's shot, Givet dithered on the ball and Crouch seized the chance to send a shot into the roof of the net.

Bale grabbed his second of the game in the 76th minute when he slipped the ball home from a cross by Alan Hutton, before Nelsen scored.

Spurs defender Younes Kaboul then cleared off the line when Diouf's shot had beaten Gomes in the 83rd minute, before Givet got Blackburn's second with a thunderous 18-yard shot in the 89th minute.

Allardyce: Bale punished us

After the match Tottenham assistant coach Joe Jordan joined in the praise for Gareth Bale. "At the moment Bale is a provider and he is also scoring goals," Jordan said.

"He is so positive going forward but he also does a shift when we have not got the ball. He has got the energy to do that.

But overall Jordan, standing in for an under-the-weather Spurs boss Harry Redknapp, said: "Some of the football we played in the first half, the openings and opportunities we created, were terrific, especially against a team who did well against Newcastle in midweek.

"I though we played exceptionally well and should have been further ahead in the first half.

"Harry is a very positive guy. He wants to play on the front foot. We picked the team to win the game.

"We are disappointed we conceded two goals. But if you do drop your concentration level that is what will happen. At 4-0 up I thought we failed to pick-up the second balls.

"I don't think it should take anything away from the result and the football we played. The way we played the game was fantastic. We played some great football."

Blackburn boss Sam Allardyce described his team's defensive display as "diabolical".

"The game from my point of view as a defensive unit was diabolical and as an attacking unit very exciting," said Allardyce. "But it is no good gifting the opposition four goals before you start putting the ball in the back of the net. We are very disappointed about the way we defended today.

"We gave ourselves too bigger mountain to climb by not doing the basic defending right, which is unlike us, unusual, but unfortunate, and we will just have to take it on the chin.

"We had our times in the game. We had a penalty given against us which wasn't a penalty. Paul Robinson had both hands on the ball but they missed it.

"We had two chances which we didn't take and then Gareth Bale goes up the other end and puts a cross in and Pavlyuchenko knocks it in for 2-0.

"That is the telling time in football you have to punish the opposition when you are in control of the game. We made a lot of chances in the second half. But their third goal summed our defending up today.

"It was a good save from Paul Robinson and the ball falls to Givet. All he has to do is clear but he gives it to Crouch to score. That summed us up today in that one moment.

"We should really have scored more than two. It was nice to see us open them up in the way we did. But Bale punished us severely today."

Huddlestone out for three months after surgery

Tottenham Hotspur midfielder Tom Huddlestone is likely to miss the next three months of the season with an ankle injury that has been troubling him for some time.

Huddlestone has been nagged by the problem for some time, and has often needed painkilling injections ahead of matches. After carrying out a scan, Spurs have decided to send him for an operation on his deterioating right ankle.

The midfielder missed the weekend's 4-2 defeat of Blackburn Rovers and his lengthy absence will cause problems for Harry Redknapp as Spurs fight on in the Premier League and face two crucial Champions League matches in order to qualify for the knock-out round.

A lack of midfield numbers means Huddlestone's loss will be keenly felt, and his partnership with Luka Modric will now be broken up as the 23-year-old joins Jermain Defoe, Michael Dawson, Ledley King and Jonathan Woodgate on the sidelines.

A club statement read: "Following consultation with several independent ankle specialists, it has been determined that Tom Huddlestone will undergo surgery on his right ankle. The procedure is likely to rule the England international out of action for around three months."
