The Leap
What exactly is the Leap?
The Leap is a small iPod sized USB peripheral that creates a 3D interaction space of 8 cubic feet to precisely interact with and control software on your laptop or desktop computer. It’s like being able to reach into the computer and pull out information as easily as reaching into a cookie jar.
The Leap senses your individual hand and finger movements independently, as well as items like a pen. In fact, it’s 200x more sensitive than existing touch-free products and technologies. It’s the difference between sensing an arm swiping through the air and being able to create a precise digital signature with a fingertip or pen.
How does the Leap work?
Due to patent pending stuff, not much is known about how the Leap works right now. What we do know is, it uses infrared light and CCD cameras.
A new mathematical algorithm powers and makes all of this possible.
What software will the Leap support?
In general, any kind of software which can get controlled by the mouse and the keyboard. It will be possible to define macros activated by gestures , move the mouse cursor and click. LeapMotion and developers will be working on integrating the Leap deeper into as much programs as possible.
We do know that 3D modeling/animation/sculpting software is pretty high on their agenda! There is also a huge interest in using the Leap in architecture design, DJing, 2D graphical work (Photoshop,….), medical applications,..
