Stocks to watch on Bursa Malaysia include glove manufacturers and Public Bank - ahead of its earnings - while other companies which would be in focus are Alliance Financial Group, Baswell Resources, Affin and Ho Hup. Also on the watch list are MALAYSIAN RESOURCES CORP [] Bhd (MRCB) and Petra Perdana.
The Employees Provident Fund (EPF) is trimming its shareholding in Alliance Financial Group, which has been in the limelight lately due to the spat between its CEO Datuk Bridget Lai and its board.

Baswell Resources' stock hit its 52-week high of 67.5 sen yesterday, before tapering off to end the day at 58 sen, up 4.5 sen gain from last Friday's close on the entry of new shareholders and the possible takeover. For more, see The Edge FinancialDaily.

Shares of Affin jumped as much 12 sen or 5% yesterday as investors reacted to news on the financial services group's intention to acquire a bank in Indonesia, the Malaysian entity's first foray overseas.

Public Bank's share surged to an all-time high of RM11.86 in anticipation of its FY09 results, which is due to be announced over the next couple of days.

MRCB's renounceable rights issue of up to 482.27 million new shares will go ex on Jan 28. The entitlement date for the rights shares is Feb 2. The corporate exercise involved the rights issue on the basis of one rights share for every two shares held on Feb 2 at 5pm at an issue price of Rm1.12 per rights share.

In Ho Hup, news reports said the board of directors alleged that RM236 million may have been lost over six years resulting from a land transaction made below market value, unauthorized cash payments and the shipping of heavy machinery to Madagascar.

Investors should note the statement was issued via a public relations company and there was no official statement made by the company to Bursa Malaysia.

However, Ho Hup did respond to the proposed alternative regularization plan made by Low Chee & Sons and Choo Soo Har @ Chou Kam Cheong.

Ho Hup said following the various consultations with the regulators, it is imperative for companies classified under PN17 status to substantially restructure its balance sheet, such that it
is able to begin on a clean slate post restructuring.

"The proposed alternative regularisation proposal does not clearly address the accumulated loss position of Ho Hup Group nor provide certainty that such losses will be substantially eliminated immediately upon completion of the proposed alternative regularisation proposal," Ho Hup said.

Financially troubled interior fit-out group LCL Corp Bhd has defaulted on more loans from AmBank (M) Bhd totalling some RM2.9 million.

Of the loans from AmBank, RM2.3 million was to its subsidiary LCL Furniture Sdn Bhd while the remaining RM573,249 was to another subsidiary LCL Trading Sdn Bhd.

In Petra Perdana, it was reported the Securities Commission was looking into the submission of executive director Shamsul Saad, purportedly relating to "breaches in procedures" over the sale of a block of Petra Energy shares belonging to Petra Perdana and also the sale of vessels by Petra Perdana to Petra Energy.

Stocks to watch include Tenaga Nasional and Public Bank, both of which will deliver their earnings with analysts upbeat on their outlook. Also to watch out for are the vehicle sales data to be released by the Malaysian Automotive Association.
Also on the watch list are Ann Joo Resources, Genting and Dayang. Ann Joo Corp Sdn Bhd, the single largest shareholder, disposed of nearly 20 million Ann Joo Resources shares recently. This came amidst positive analysts reports about the outlook for the steel sector.

GENTING BHD [] plans to build a theme park and hotel within the Iskandar region in Johor to complement the group's Resorts World Sentosa attraction in Singapore, said its chairman Tan Sri Lim Kok Thay.

Genting is also looking at investments in the US as the global financial crisis in the US had offered several opportunities for the company.

Genting's US$4.4 billion integrated casino-resort will open its doors in Singapore today also.

Offshore services provider DAYANG ENTERPRISE HOLDINGS BHD [] has secured a RM70 million contract to charter its workboat Dayang Zamrud for a well reservoir management project undertaken by Brunei Shell Petroleum Company Sdn Bhd

Meanwhile, EON CAPITAL BHD [] is exploring several options including sale of assets and liabilities, acquisition of 5% stake or even merger with a local financial institution.

Ho Hup CONSTRUCTION [] Co. Bhd said the first and second reports undertaken by the investigative accountants Messrs Anuarul Azizan Chew & Co. revealed there existed reasonable suspicion that various offences of criminal breaches of trust.

Japan's Nikon Corp Ltd has emerged as a substantial shareholder in NOTION VTEC BHD [] after taking up 10% or 13.84 million shares in the precision component maker in a private placement exercise.

The shares were placed out for a total of RM33.78 million or RM2.44 a share, the price set on Jan 6, 2010, at a 10% discount to the weighted average market price of RM2.7066 for the five preceding market days.

LKT INDUSTRIAL BHD [] received a notice from Singapore Precision Engineering Pte Ltd (SPE) to take over the remaining shares in the company it does not already own at RM2.10 cash per share.

The voluntary offer for some 10.09 million shares, or 14.24% of LKT, that were not already owned by SPE and parties acting in concert would be posted to the respective shareholders within seven days, LKT said in a filing with Bursa Malaysia.

Lembaga Tabung Haji (LTH) recently raised its stake in Xingquan International Sports Holdings Ltd after acquiring two million shares in the Chinese sportswear maker, raising its stake to 5.2%. The stock rose two sen to RM1.19 yesterday

At Bursa Malaysia, among the stocks to watch are Tenaga Nasional, Public Bank, EON Capital and Baswell. Also on the watch list are Ho Hup CONSTRUCTION [] Company, SapuraCrest Petroleum, KYM Holdings and Leader Universal.

Tenaga Nasional expects to maintain its improved earnings in its (1QFY10) for the rest of the financial year ending Aug 31, 2010.

While its president and chief executive officer Datuk Seri Che Khalib Mohamad Noh expects the power giant to do “definitely do better this year and we did last year”, he warned of higher coal costs because of the bitter cold front crossing the Northern hemisphere.

Regular discussions are on-going over Tenaga’s request for a tariff increase despite there is no latest updates, Che Khalib said.

Meanwhile, OSK Investment Research has downgraded its recommendation for Public Bank to NEUTRAL as its share price has run ahead of its target price of RM11.80.

“The stock has performed favourably over the past few weeks in anticipation of stronger than expected 4Q09 results.

“However, more restrained future dividend payouts coupled with concerns over the need for additional capital and hence more subdued ROE growth is likely to cap Public Bank’s share price performance over the immediate to medium term,” it said.

OSK Research said this could be further weighed down by the stock’s relatively rich valuations of 3.7 times FY10 price-to-book value (PBV). " As such, we have downgraded our recommendation to NEUTRAL as its share price has run ahead of our Target price of RM11.80,” it said.

Furniture maker Baswell announced it received a subcontract deal worth US$100 million from Hong Kong-based Metroplex Resources Ltd to manufacture and install the furniture and fittings of the Al Reem Island mixed development in Abu Dhabi.

EONCap has received Bank Negara Malaysia’s nod to start talks with HONG LEONG BANK BHD [] for the potential divestment of its assets and liabilities, including EON Bank Bhd.

SAPURACREST PETROLEUM BHD [] plans to tap into the fast-growing oil and gas (O&G) industry in India, having invested US$110 million (RM369.6 million) under two joint-ventures and building two derrick lay barges that are expected to start operations in the first quarter of 2010.

Ho Hup Construction’s former managing director Datuk Low Tuck Chee is seeking details on all the accusations that the existing board has hurled at him.

KYM, whose shares have surged since the sale of its land to Vale, has proposed a private placement of up to 8.11 million new shares of 50 sen each, or 10% of its paid-up capital, for 75 sen per share.

Leader Universal’s Cambodian Transmission Ltd
, has signed a 25-year build-operate-transfer (B-O-T) power transmission agreement with Cambodia's Electricite Du Combodge to develop a 230 kilvolt power transmission system costing US$107 million, from Phnom Penh to Kampong Cham.

Jewellery-maker and direct seller Zhulian Corp Bhd shone in its 4Q results ended Nov 30, 2009, reporting a 29% surge in net profit on-year due to higher overseas demand for its products.

Gunung Capital proposed a 60% reduction in the par value of its shares through the cancelling of 60 sen in the par value of each of its RM1 share, along with a renounceable rights issue with free warrants to raise up to RM27.9 million in order to finance its acquisition of GPB.

Stocks to watch on Bursa are Hong Leong Bank, EON Cap, Proton, telcos and Petra Perdana.
Hong Leong Bank offered RM4.92 billion for the entire assets and liabilities of EON CAPITAL BHD [] (EONCap), which owns EON Bank Bhd, representing an offer price of RM7.10 per share. EON Cap shares closed at RM7.10 on Thursday.

Shares of Proton Holdings rose 10% or 40 sen in the past two trading days bouyed by the positive sentiment surrounding the automotive sector. Expectation of higher car sales also helped to lend support to the counter.

As for Malaysia’s telecommunications companies, CIMB Research says they are expected to show a better fourth quarter (4Q) when they report their full-year results over the next few weeks.

“We believe that Malaysia’s telcos enjoyed higher profits in the fourth quarter of 2009, thanks to festivities, wireless broadband, subscriber growth and an improving economy.

“The chief beneficiaries were probably Celcom and Maxis. We do not expect nasty surprises and also do not rule out higher-than-expected dividends at DIGI.COM BHD [] and Maxis Bhd,” it said.

In oil and gas support service provider Petra Perdana, the Minority Shareholder Watchdog Group (MSWG) is playing an active role to ensure that the power tussle will not jeopardise minorities' interest.

As for YTL CEMENT BHD [], its unit YTL Cement Singapore Pte Ltd has made an offer to purchase Holcim Investments (Singapore) Pte Ltd's entire 55.87% equity stake in Jurong Cement Ltd (JCL) for S$61.9 million (RM148.98 million) or S$2.50 per share.
