Dundee Crisis : Melville quits Dundee board but cash offer stands

Calum Melville has confirmed his resignation from the Dundee board. However, it is understood Melville still intends to fulfil his pledge to hand over £200,000 to help the club through their administration period.

Melville is believed to have deposited £50,000 in a club bank account last week and has told administrator Bryan Jackson of PKF that he will release three more instalments before the end of the year. A spokesman for PKF confirmed Melville's resignation today, alongside those of fellow board members Bob Brannan and George Knight, who was brought in as a supporters' representative. Main benefactor Melville had offered to quit a month ago amid difficulties in his personal business life, in the first public sign of serious issues facing the Irn-Bru First Division club.

Confirmation comes after former manager Gordon Chisholm, who was made redundant on Friday along with assistant Billy Dodds and nine players, hit out at the running of the club. Chisholm claimed other directors were too scared to upset Melville in case he pulled his money out, and revealed he had little or no communication with the main directors over the summer as he tried to rebuild his squad on a reduced budget.

Former chairman Brannan announced his resignation at the weekend, vowing to release his 54 per cent shareholding to Jackson to sell to fans and raise money to keep the club alive. He said in a statement on the club's official website: "Calum Melville initially invested heavily with a view to achieving rapid promotion back to the SPL.

"It is a matter of public record that he committed to funding the club through to the end of season 2010/11. However, anticipated revenues from operating activities have failed to materialise, the funding gap has grown and Calum's own personal circumstances have changed, all contributing to the current situation.''

Meanwhile, former director Giovanni di Stefano has written to Jackson expressing his interest in purchasing the club outright. The lawyer, who was on the board when the club went into administration in 2003, has asked Jackson to provide him with a figure outlining the club's liabilities and an estimated amount needed to fund them through the season.

Jackson revealed on Friday that the club's total debt was around £2 million, of which about £420,000 is owed to Her Majesty's Revenue and Customs. The administrator warned that there was only enough money to run the club until Christmas.

McGinn targets Old Firm return

Celtic winger Niall McGinn is hoping for a dramatic comeback from injury by making his Old Firm debut in this weekend's much-anticipated clash with Rangers. McGinn has yet to feature for the Hoops this season, after battling back to fitness following five months on the sidelines with a broken metatarsal. He played in Northern Ireland's games against Italy and Faroe Islands, as well as a friendly against Falkirk in midweek.

The 23-year-old has told boss Neil Lennon he is now fit and ready for action if called upon and believes Sunday's derby would be the ideal occasion to finally put his injury woes behind him.

"It's always good when a derby match against Rangers comes around," McGinn said. "Every time the fixtures come out, it's probably the first one I look for. I've been on the bench at one of the games but have still to play in one.

"Hopefully, come Sunday, I am on the bench again and with a bit of luck I will get some game-time. "It would be unbelievable. I grew up watching the Glasgow derby, so the opportunity to play in one would be unbelievable. If I get the opportunity to play, I'll just enjoy every minute of it but, more important, is having a win at the end of it."

Celtic and Rangers head into the game locked on the same points at the top of the Clydesdale Bank Premier League, with both clubs boasting 100% records in the league so far, and McGinn is well aware of the importance of a victory this weekend.

"It's a massive thing. Both teams are in good form," he said. "I felt on Sunday we deserved to win against Dundee United, we were the better team, and it was good to see Gary Hooper get some goals as well. "I'm just looking forward to the match and hopefully I get the opportunity to play."

As well as his involvement with the national team, McGinn netted twice in the 3-0 win over Falkirk at Westfield on Tuesday. He told the club's official website: "I was delighted to get back scoring again and get my confidence back.

"I was also glad the manager was there watching and he seemed pleased after the game, so I enjoyed it and to get another 90 minutes under my belt and score two goals was pleasing as well.
"I felt good throughout the game and I was also glad to see Paddy McCourt score as well. Hopefully we'll both be in contention come the Rangers game at the weekend."

He added: "Obviously your fitness can take care of itself due to all the training you are doing but playing games will help your sharpness.

"Match fitness is different from natural fitness as well, so you need to get working on that and thankfully getting the games with Danny McGrain and at international level have both come at the right time. "My fitness is good at the minute and I'll just play it by ear just now and continue to work hard and, hopefully, keep making the bench and get the opportunity to get on and impress."
