MARKET WRAP: STOCKS, BONDS, COMMODITIES



On Thursday, all the three major U.S. stock indexes closed at record levels again, with the Dow Jones Industrial Average rising 242 points (+0.64%) to 38,049, the S&P 500 up 25 points (+0.53%) to 4,894, and the Nasdaq 100 up 17 points (+0.10%) to 17,516.

Energy (+2.23%), telecom services (+2.16%), and household & personal products (+2.09%) stock sectors were the top performers, while automobiles & components (-9.66%), health care equipment & services (-0.56%), and insurance (-0.33%) sectors lost the most.

Alphabet (GOOGL) advanced 2.13% to $151.87, a record close.

Microsoft (MSFT, +0.57%) and Nvidia (NVDA, +0.42%) also closed at record levels.

Tesla (TSLA) plunged 12.13% to $182.63, the lowest level since last May. The electric-vehicle maker posted lower-than-expected fourth-quarter results, and warned of lower vehicle volume growth in 2024.

Boeing (BA) fell 5.72% after U.S. aviation authorities did not allow the plane-maker to expand production of its 737 MAX jet.

Humana (HUM) dropped 11.69%, as the health-insurance provider's 2024 earnings forecast missed expectations

On the other hand, IBM (IBM) jumped 9.49% after giving an upbeat full-year revenue growth forecast and announced plans to cut jobs.

In after-market hours, Intel (INTC) sank 8% as the chip maker's first-quarter result guidance significantly fell short of market expectations.

Meanwhile, the U.S. 10-year Treasury yield retreated 5.8 basis points to 4.120%.

Regarding U.S. economic data, the gross domestic product grew at an impressive annualized rate of 3.3% on quarter in the fourth quarter (vs +2.3% expected). Durable goods orders showed no growth in December (vs +0.1% expected).

The latest number of initial jobless claims increased to 214,000 (vs 192,000 expected). New home sales climbed 8.0% on month in December (as expected).

European stocks closed higher, with the DAX 40 adding 0.10%, the CAC 40 up 0.11%, and the FTSE 100 up 0.03%.

U.S. WTI crude-oil rose $2.09 (+2.78%) to $77.18 a barrel. Oil prices were boosted by faster-than-expected U.S. economic growth and persistent tensions in the Red Sea.

Gold price gained $7 to $2,019 an ounce.





MARKET WRAP: FOREX



The U.S. dollar was firm against other major currencies, as upbeat U.S. economy growth suggested the Federal Reserve would not cut interest rates very soon. The dollar index climbed to 103.51.

EUR/USD fell 40 pips to 1.0843. As expected, the European Central Bank (ECB) decided to keep its key interest rates unchanged at 4.00%. ECB President Christine Lagarde said it was premature to discuss rate cuts.

Germany's Ifo business climate index declined to 85.2 in January (vs 87.1 expected). France's business confidence index remained stable at 99 in January (as expected).

USD/JPY gained 18 pips to 147.68. This morning, Japan's data showed that Tokyo's core inflation rate slowed to 1.6% on year in January (vs 1.9% expected).

GBP/USD slipped 14 pips to 1.2709, while AUD/USD added 7 pips to 0.6583.

USD/CHF rose 45 pips to 0.8672.

USD/CAD dropped 53 pips to 1.3469. Canada's data showed that manufacturing sales dropped 0.6% on month in December (vs +0.4% expected).

Bitcoin continued to dance around the key level of $40,000.

MARKET WRAP: STOCKS, BONDS, COMMODITIES





On Thursday, the three major U.S. stock indexes closed at record levels for the second consecutive session. The S&P 500 closed 3 points higher (+0.06%) at 4,997 after touching the 5,000-point milestone for the first time ever. The Dow Jones Industrial Average advanced 48 points (+0.13%) to 38,726, and the Nasdaq 100 was up 28 points (+0.16%) to 17,783.

Consumer staples, energy, and real estate stock sectors gained the most, while utilities, financial, and health care sectors underperformed the market.

Microsoft (MSFT) edged up 6 cents to $414.11, another record closing level.

Walt Disney (DIS) surged 11.50%. The entertainment and media giant posted better-than-expected quarterly earnings, raised its dividend by 50% and announced a $3 billion stock buyback.

Arm Holdings (ARM), a chip maker, soared 47.89%, and Ralph Lauren (RL), a lifestyle-product designer, surged 16.79%, as both companies' quarterly results beat expectations.

On the other hand, PayPal (PYPL), an online payment firm, slid 11.24% after giving a downbeat full-year earnings forecast.

New York Community Bancorp (NYCB) sank 6.47%, as the bank's credit rating was cut by Morningstar.

Bitcoin- and cryptocurrency-related stocks outperformed the market as Bitcoin regained another key level of $45,000. Marathon Digital (MARA) soared 23.03%, Microstrategy (MSTR) surged 15.71%, and Coinbase Global (COIN) gained 8.59%.

The 10-year Treasury yield rose 5.4 basis points to 4.152%.

U.S. data showed that the latest number of initial jobless claims declined to 218,00 (vs 227,000 expected).

European stocks closed higher, with the DAX 40 rising 0.25%, and the CAC 40 up 0.71%, and the FTSE 100 up 0.44%.

Gold price was little changed at $2,033 an ounce.





MARKET WRAP: FOREX





The U.S. dollar index was stable at 104.13.

EUR/USD added 7 pips to 1.0778.

USD/JPY jumped 112 pips (+0.76%) to 149.30.

GBP/USD dipped 7 pips to 1.2617. In the U.K., the Royal Institute of Chartered Surveyors (RICS) house price index improved to -18% in January (vs -27% expected).

AUD/USD fell 27 pips to 0.6491.

USD/CHF dropped 7 pips to 0.8736, and USD/CAD was down 6 pips to 1.3457.

USD/CNH rose 21 pips to 7.2149. China continued to see deflation, as consumer prices dropped 0.8% on year in January (vs -0.4% expected).

Bitcoin extended its rally to a fourth session, as it jumped over 2% to $45,500.

MARKET WRAP: STOCKS, BONDS, COMMODITIES


On Tuesday, U.S. stocks encountered a sell-off triggered by hotter-than-expected inflation data. The Dow Jones Industrial Average fell 524 points (-1.35%) to 38,272, the S&P 500 dropped 68 points (-1.37%) to 4,953, and the Nasdaq 100 slid 282 points (-1.58%) to 17,600.

U.S. official data showed that the inflation rate eased to 3.1% on year in January (as expected, vs 3.4% in December), while the core inflation rate stayed at 3.9% on year (vs 3.7% expected).

According to the CME FedWatch tool, traders now see a 36% chance of the Federal Reserve cutting interest rates in May, down from 58% before.

Consumer discretionary, real estate and technology stock sectors lost the most Tuesday.

Tesla (TSLA), Microsoft (MSFT) and Amazon.com (AMZN) retreated over 2%, and Meta Platforms (META), Alphabet (GOOGL) and Apple (AAPL) were all down over 1%.

JetBlue Airways (JBLU) soared 21.58% as activist investor Carl Icahn disclosed a 10% stake in the airline company

Tripadvisor (TRIP) surged 13.81%. The online travel agency said it has formed a special board committee to explore a potential sale of the company.

Avis Budget Group (CAR) tumbled 22.90%. The car vehicle rental company's quarterly sales missed expectations.

European stocks also closed lower, with the DAX 40 falling 0.92%, the CAC 40 down 0.84%, and the FTSE 100 down 0.81%.

U.S. WTI crude-oil futures rose $0.81 (+1.05%) to $77.73 a barrel.

Gold price slumped $27 to $1,992 an ounce.


MARKET WRAP: FOREX


The U.S. dollar gained against other major currencies, boosted by firm inflation data. The dollar index rebounded to 104.88.

EUR/USD lost 65 pips to 1.0706. Germany's ZEW economic sentiment index rose to 19.9 in February (vs 18.0 expected).

France's jobless rate stood at 7.5% in the fourth quarter (vs 7.2% expected).

USD/JPY jumped 146 pips (+0.98%) to 150.8.

GBP/USD slipped 41 pips to 1.2585. In the U.K., the latest jobless rate declined to 3.8% (vs 4.0% expected).

AUD/USD fell 77 pips (-1.18%) to 0.6452.

USD/CHF bounced 115 pips (+1.31%) to 0.8871, and USD/CAD climbed 118 pips to 1.3566.

Bitcoin once lost the level of $49,000 before climbing back to $49,500.
