5 David Coote decisions that went against Liverpool – from 2019 to 2024

In light of David Coote’s suspension after a foul-mouthed video emerged of the referee criticising Liverpool and Jurgen Klopp, we take a look at his history with the club.
Coote has been suspended with immediate effect pending a full investigation after a video surfaced from 2020, where it appears he calls Klopp an “absolute c***.”
This is the latest flashpoint in what feels like an endless list when it comes to Coote and Liverpool, and here we recount some of his most contentious moments.
Prepare to feel your blood boil as you relive these!

Divock Origi foul denied – 2019

In Liverpool’s title-winning season, Coote was in the VAR booth for the trip to Old Trafford.
That game saw Marcus Rashford’s opener stand despite a VAR check on a foul from Victor Lindelof on Divock Origi in the buildup. Klopp described it after the game as “a goal which shows all the problems with VAR.”
The match ended 1-1.

Andy Robertson’s furious protest – 2020

In the same season, Coote was the on-field referee when Andy Robertson felt he should have been awarded a clear penalty after a foul in the box during a 1-1 draw with Burnley at Anfield.
His claim was waved away by Coote, and there was a heated exchange between Robertson and the referee after the final whistle, with Klopp and Trent Alexander-Arnold also joining in. The Scot said:
“How that’s not a penalty on me…What’s the point in having [VAR]? What is the point in having you?
“Wait until you see it. Wait until you go in and see that and you’ll go, ‘How the f*** is that not a penalty?’.
“You didn’t see f***ing anything. You didn’t see anything the whole game apart from f***ing booking him in the last minute.
“F*** me. What’s the point of having you in the middle? What’s the point of having you? Eh? F*** me, honestly.”

‘FORGOT’ to check Pickford tackle on Van Dijk – 2020

This is the most famous incident of them all.
Coote was the VAR in the Merseyside derby at Goodison during the lockdown season. That day, Jordan Pickford’s late, reckless challenge forced Virgil van Dijk to miss the rest of the campaign.
We all expected immediate action for the Everton goalkeeper, but it was later reported that Coote FORGOT to check for a red card.
Michael Oliver, referee that day, later admitted that he should have sent Pickford off, as he and Coote “got sucked too much” into checking for the offside.

This match also saw Jordan Henderson be denied a dramatic last-gasp winner by an incredibly marginal offside call – and pictures failed to concretely show the reason. The game finished 2-2.
How the list goes beyond this is telling…

That handball vs. Arsenal – 2023

Anyone with eyes could see that Martin Odegaard turned into a basketball player at Anfield last season, and yet Coote – with countless angles and opportunities for replays – did not.
The Arsenal captain made a clear movement towards the ball with his hand, but neither the referee, Chris Kavanagh, nor Coote in the VAR room gave Klopp’s side a penalty.
Coote assessed: “For me, Lee (Betts)… he’s falling down, he’s moving his arms towards him, so it’s check complete for me.”
Howard Webb later admitted that “this one did not reach the right outcome.” That’s putting it lightly!
An independent panel, separately, adjudged 4-1 in favour that a penalty should have been award.
Ultimately, the game finished 1-1 in what was a decisive game in the title race.

Salah dragged down but NO foul?! – 2024

SalahCooteVilla-600x400.jpg

Now we arrive at the most recent incident, against Aston Villa – one of the rare occasions the Reds won in spite of Coote’s incompetence.
Mohamed Salah was closing in on the goal and the last defender took him out, denying a clear goalscoring opportunity.
Coote, the on-field referee, immediately waved it away despite being just metres away from the incident.
Darwin Nunez went on to score, thankfully for Liverpool, but it is alarming that Coote did not see it as a foul or an incident worthy of punishing Leon Bailey with a red card.
Another farcical chapter in the book of run-ins with Coote.

Premier League referee David Coote has been suspended pending further investigation after allegedly calling Liverpool "s***" and Jurgen Klopp a "German c***" in a bombshell video leaked online.
The video, which appears to have been filmed several years ago during the Covid-19 pandemic and was posted on X, appears to feature Coote talking to a man while sitting on a sofa. PGMOL sources confirmed earlier on Monday that they were investigating after being made aware of the video and within an hour it was announced that Coote was being sidelined.

A statement said: "David Coote has been suspended with immediate effect pending a full investigation. PGMOL will be making no further comment until that process is complete."
The FA have opened a separate investigation, a spokesperson confirmed. Liverpool have also been contacted for comment.
Coote is understood to have accepted the viral video in which he appears is genuine. However, it is believed he does not recall the content of the discussion, recorded several years ago.
The video appears to have been filmed the evening after a Liverpool game with the other man asking: "What did you think of the Liverpool game earlier?"

Coote allegedly responded by saying: "Liverpool were s***." The other man then asked: "What do you think of Jurgen Klopp?" To which Coote replied: "C***. Absolute c***.
"Aside from having a right pop at me when I refereed them against Burnley in lockdown, he accused me of lying then had a right f****** pop at me."

Referring to a second match in which he was acting as fourth official, he continued: "I've got no interest in speaking to someone who's f****** arrogant. So I do my best not to speak to him. James Milner's alright.
"You can see me there [in a picture on his phone] with a mask on. Got to careful right, we're social distancing, we're two metres apart. But my God, German c***. F*** me."

Coote then made a plea to whoever was being sent the video to not share it. He added: "Just to be clear, that f****** last video can't go anywhere. Seriously."
Coote has been a Premier League referee since 2018, having overseen EFL games for eight years before that. He had a number of run-ins with Klopp during the German's time as Liverpool boss.
One of those flashpoints came last December when he was on VAR duty for the Reds' clash with Arsenal. Gunners captain Martin Odegaard handled the ball in the box as he was falling to the ground, but it was deemed by referee Chris Kavanagh that the Norwegian hadn't done it deliberately, despite halting the passage of play, with Coote at Stockley Park agreeing.
"Yes, I have seen it," Klopp fumed afterwards. "I am pretty sure someone will come to explain it to me why it was not a handball but I don't know how?

"I don't say that the ref can see it because I don't know where he was in that moment. But how can a guy in an office see that and not come to the conclusion that maybe, possibly, it could be worth the referee having another look?"
The Burnley game referenced in the video, which ended in a controversial 1-1 draw, saw defender Andy Robertson launching a foul-mouthed rant at Coote that was picked by TV microphones after not being awarded a penalty.
Robertson had said: "How’s that not a penalty is a disgrace. How the f*** is that not a penalty? You didn’t see f****** anything.

"You didn’t see anything the whole game apart from f****** booking them in the last minute. F*** me. What’s the point in having you in the middle? What’s the point in having you? F*** me. Honestly."
Coote last took charge of Liverpool on Saturday, when the Reds claimed a 2-0 win over Aston Villa. They are now five points clear of closest challengers Manchester City at the top of the Premier League table.

Suspended Premier League referee David Coote 'filmed snorting white powder during Euro 2024'

  • Coote has been suspended by the PGMOL for making disparaging comments about Liverpool and Jurgen Klopp
  • A video has now emerged of him allegedly snorting a white powder this summer

The latest video is said to have been recorded on July 6, the day after the Euro 2024 quarter-final between Portugal and France, in which Coote was a support VAR official and Michael Oliver was the referee.

It is also reported to have been filmed in a UEFA-funded hotel room. UEFA said on Wednesday night in relation to Coote’s previous conduct: ‘The UEFA Referees Committee immediately suspended David Coote until further notice on November 11 when it became aware of his inappropriate behaviour.’

A PGMOL spokesperson said: ‘We are aware of the allegations and are taking them very seriously. David Coote remains suspended pending a full investigation.

‘David’s welfare continues to be of utmost importance to us and we are committed to providing him with the ongoing necessary support he needs through this period.

‘We are not in a position to comment further at this stage.’

Mail Sport reported on Tuesday that Saudi Arabia could be a potential escape route for Coote. However, the emergence of the latest video will surely put paid to any switch to the Middle East.

The Sun, who obtained the clip, claim Coote sent it to a friend from his hotel room.

His friend reportedly claims Coote made disparaging remarks about Everton, including calling Goodison Park the worst place to officiate due to fans ‘shouting abuse so close to the pitch’.

The friend also alleges Coote labelled Liverpool defender Andy Robertson a ‘Scottish p****’, while saying in video chats that the Anfield club would ‘not win the Premier League’ this season. In the original clip, the Nottinghamshire official claimed Klopp was ‘arrogant’.

‘Aside from having a right pop at me when I reffed them against Burnley in lockdown, then he (Klopp) accused me of lying and had a right f*****g pop at me,’ said Coote. ‘I’ve got no interest in speaking to someone who’s f****** arrogant. I do my best not to speak to him.

‘My God, German c***, f*** me.’

The top Premiership referees get a salary of up to £147,000 a year, plus over £1,000 per game, plus performance bonuses plus fees for officiating in international competitions. You would think that for those sums integrity and behaviour to the highest standards would be a given, but obviously no

Referees' body PGMOL says it is taking new allegations around Premier League official David Coote "very seriously".

Coote is suspended from his role pending an investigation into a video which emerged earlier this week, in which the 42-year-old appeared to make disparaging remarks about former Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp.

On Wednesday the Sun newspaper published pictures it says were taken during this summer's European Championship, alleging they appear to show Coote sniffing a white powder through a rolled up US bank note.

Coote was working at the Euros in his capacity as a match official.

A PGMOL spokesperson said: "We are aware of the allegations and are taking them very seriously.

"David Coote remains suspended pending a full investigation.

"David's welfare continues to be of utmost importance to us and we are committed to providing him with the ongoing necessary support he needs through this period. We are not in a position to comment further at this stage."
