By LEE YUK PENG
KUALA LUMPUR: A total of 85 Members of Parliament have given their signatures to support a motion to discuss repealing the Internal Security Act (ISA) in the Dewan Rakyat.
They comprise 81 MPs from Opposition ranks, a Barisan backbencher and three independent MPs.
“Abolish ISA” parliamentary caucus chairman Lim Kit Siang said the first batch of signatures would be submitted to Prime Minister Datuk Seri Abdullah Ahmad Badawi soon.
More MPs were still being approached to pledge their support.
“I hope that with one-third of MPs wanting to have the motion discussed in Dewan Rakyat, this will be made a top priority.
“In a ‘First World’ parliament, it is the MPs who set the agenda and not the Executive,” he said at Parliament Lobby on Thursday.
Teresa Kok (DAP - Seputeh) has filed a motion to debate the use of the ISA against Sin Chew Daily reporter Tan Hoon Cheng, Malaysia Today editor Raja Petra Raja Kamarudin and Kok herself.
She said the above use of the ISA was “unfair and contradicted natural justice and human rights.”
