RI ready to become partner in establishing global AI governance: govt

Jakarta (ANTARA) - Indonesia is ready to contribute as an active partner in establishing inclusive global AI governance, bringing the perspective of developing countries, Finance Minister Purbaya Yudhi Sadewa stated.

"Indonesia's involvement in AI has grown from its early development stages to an integral part of the entire economy," Purbaya said in his statement on Monday, following the IMFC Early Warning Exercise he attended on the sidelines of the IMF-World Bank Spring Meetings, held from April 13 to 17 in Washington.

By 2025, the minister said, the information and communications technology (ICT) sector is expected to record its highest growth rate in history, at 8.35 percent.

This growth is supported by more than 12,000 km of fiber-optic networks and a national satellite capacity of 150 Gbps.

Indonesia is actively strengthening its national AI ecosystem to ensure that productivity gains can be optimized domestically, while remaining open to global collaboration and positioning Indonesia as a user and developer of AI-based solutions.

Furthermore, Indonesia will remain vigilant against emerging systemic risks, including the potential for asset bubbles from AI investments, labor market disruptions due to automation, increased market concentration by global platforms, financial stability risks from AI-based decision-making, and fiscal erosion from cross-border digital activity.

In the context of global participation, according to Purbaya, Indonesia is ready to advance an AI-specific early warning mechanism to anticipate systemic financial risks.

Other support provided includes ensuring the widespread distribution of AI benefits to support equitable and sustainable global growth.

During the IMF-World Bank Spring Meetings, Purbaya also held several bilateral meetings with various development partners and partner countries, including Mathias Cormann, Secretary-General of the Organization for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD).

The OECD expressed its support for Indonesia's accession process and its support for institutional capacity and knowledge development for its National Single Window Agency (LNSW).
