Ministry prepares grand design to meet national teacher demand

Bandarlampung, Lampung (ANTARA) - The Ministry of Primary and Secondary Education is preparing an integrated national blueprint to meet Indonesia's long-term teacher workforce needs.

"The policy covers teacher education, Teacher Professional Education (PPG), certification, professional development, and national teacher workforce planning," Deputy Minister of Primary and Secondary Education Fajar Riza Ul Haq said on Saturday.

He said the initiative follows President Prabowo Subianto's directive to establish a more integrated and sustainable teacher governance system.

"Minister of Primary and Secondary Education Abdul Mu'ti has followed up on the President's directive by preparing a comprehensive blueprint to meet national teacher demand, including teacher governance. We have received strong support from relevant ministries and institutions in addressing teacher-related issues," he said.

According to Haq, the policy forms part of President Prabowo Subianto's Asta Cita agenda, which identifies human resource development as one of the country's national development priorities.

"With teacher demand expected to increase in the coming years, the government believes that reforming teacher education cannot be achieved simply by increasing the number of graduates," he said.

He emphasized that the greater priority is to establish a system that aligns national teacher demand with teacher education, certification, and continuous professional development.

"The quality of education ultimately depends on the quality of teachers. Therefore, strengthening Teacher Training Institutions (LPTKs) must become an integral part of national education reform," he said.

Haq noted that Indonesia has strong potential to meet future teacher workforce demand, citing a surplus of approximately 1.6 million education graduates over the past decade.

"This potential needs to be optimized through the implementation of Pre-Service Teacher Professional Education, which is designed based on the actual needs of educational institutions, so that teacher deployment can be more targeted," he said.
