Medan extends disaster emergency status for 14 days

Medan (ANTARA) - The Medan City Government in North Sumatra has extended its disaster emergency status for 14 days, from December 11 to December 24, 2025.

The extension aims to optimize recovery efforts following the floods that struck the city on Thursday, November 27.

Medan Mayor Rico Tri Putra Waas said the extension was necessary because the city was still in the recovery phase.

“The Disaster Emergency Status in Medan City has been extended. We see that Medan is currently in the recovery process. Therefore, more intensive handling is needed during this extended emergency period,” he said in Medan on Thursday.

He explained that the policy also serves as mitigation for potential disasters caused by extreme rainfall forecast for December 8 to December 15, 2025, according to the Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysics Agency (BMKG).

During the extended emergency period, Rico Waas instructed all city government units to strengthen coordination and follow up on public service needs after the floods.

The Medan administration has also prepared additional measures, including repairs to damaged public facilities.

“We will continue operating the Disaster Post at the Medan PKK Multipurpose Building until December 25, 2025. The post is expected to continue accommodating the needs of residents affected by the disaster during this recovery phase,” he said.

The Medan City Government had initially declared the emergency status from November 27 to December 11, 2025, before deciding to extend the period.
