Keanu Reeves had an unexpected hit with the 2014 action film John Wick. The movie showcased to the world that the now 51-year-old actor could still kick butt with the best of them. Adored by critics and profitable when one considers its modest $20 million budget, John Wick getting a sequel was quickly seen as a formality, and sure enough Lionsgate did just that not long after. While production on John Wick: Chapter 2 currently continues — and its release date remains nearly a year away — that hasn’t stopped Reeves from formulating ideas for even more adventures starring the dog-loving assassin.
During a recent interview, Reeves was asked about the experience of making John Wick 2, and replied with the following superlatives:
“I love John Wick. We had an amazing time making this story. I can’t say that we’re not geeked about continuing the idea and the character. We have some really cool ideas. We talk about what would be cool to take it to the next level.”
For those yet to take the plunge into John Wick’s world of chaotic gunplay and mayhem, the first film starts with Wick as a retired assassin who finds himself forced out of his quiet civilian life by the brutal murder of his beloved dog at the hands of the son of a powerful crime boss. Wick — who holds an almost mythical status within the underworld community — responds to this tragic event by embarking on a rampage of revenge against those responsible, all the while thwarting rival assassins hired by his nemesis’ father. The sequel sends Wick to Rome, where a blood oath compels him to assist an old colleague with his quest to seize control of an international assassin syndicate, putting both men on the kill list of some of the globes’ most lethal people.
With the original John Wick set almost entirely within the assassin hangout known as The Continental and its surrounding New York City environs, John Wick 2′s trip to Europe represents a huge expansion to the budding franchise’s universe, introducing multiple new characters such as the mysterious Bowery King (Laurence Fishburne). In addition to reuniting Reeves with his Matrix co-star for the first time, John Wick 2’s probable success could easily solidify the title character as an action genre institution, making it easy to understand why the man behind him is so keen on continuing the series.
The potential for globetrotting in future sequels is basically limitless, as it’s hard to imagine a locale on Earth that doesn’t contain some type of underground criminal ecosystem full of people for the anti-heroic Wick to tangle with. After all, good, bad, he’s the guy with the gun(s).
John Wick: Chapter 2 opens in U.S. theaters on February 10, 2017.
