Iran sentences spy to death

Iran yesterday sentenced an Iranian businessman to death for helping Israel spy on Iranian military sites.

Ali Ashtari, 43, was found guilty of being a mohareb - that is, someone who fights with God - by the Revolutionary Court. He was reported to have imported electronic equipment giving him access to Iran's research, atomic energy and military centres.

"I fell into the trap of the Israeli intelligence service unknowingly and was never aware that I was co-operating with Mossad," Mr Ashtari said at his trial.

Mr Ashtari's trial was held at the weekend and his picture was shown for the first time yesterday when the verdict was announced. He has the right to appeal against his sentence.
