Focus Lumber Bhd, a Sabah-based plywood, veneer and laminated veneer manufacturer (LVL), aims to raise some RM7.32 million from an initial public offering (IPO) to fund working capital.


It is headed for the Main Market of Bursa Malaysia at the end of April and its prospectus is likely to be out in early April.

The group is offering 12.2 million new shares priced at 60 sen each to the investing public. Some 57 per cent of that is being underwritten by Bank Islam Malaysia Bhd and BIMB Securities Sdn Bhd, the IPO arranger.

At the underwriting ceremony held in Kota Kinabalu yesterday, Focus Lumber managing director Lin Fong Ming, Bank Islam managing director Datuk Seri Zukri Samat and BIMB Securities chief executive officer Rashid Ismail signed the documents.

"We are very pleased to have won the trust and confidence of one of the major plywood manufacturers in the countries," Zukri said.

Lin said that their decision to step foot in Malaysia in the 1980s was one of the best they had made, and Sabah in particular, because of its rich natural tropical forest resources.

The company holds 22 per cent of the domestic market and sells products to over 14 countries including the US, Australia, Mexico and some in Europe. It was set up in Keningau, in the interior of Sabah, in 1990 and commenced business in November 1991. Its LVL products are made from recycled wood waste.

"Our plywood is environmentally friendly and we were the first Malaysian plywood mill company to be certified as a California Air Resources Board Certified manufacturer," Lin said in his speech.

Focus Lumber integrates different types of timber logs to produce plywood, reducing the restriction in the use of only certain types of timber logs.

AirAsia X board to meet soon to pick advisers for IPO

SEPANG: Long-haul budget carrier AirAsia X has set the ball rolling for its initial public offering (IPO) exercise, as it has sent out request for proposals (RFPs) to local and international banks and will appoint advisers after a board meeting in June.

AirAsia X Sdn Bhd chief executive officer Azran Osman-Rani (pic) said the deadline for the RFPs to be submitted is next week before bankers are called in for a selection process in May.

“The board of directors will then have a meeting in June, in which advisers will be chosen and the specific details of the IPO such as how much will be raised, where and when the listings will take place, as well as the structure of the IPO will be ironed out,” he told StarBiz in an interview yesterday.

KUALA LUMPUR: Sabah-based plywood, veneer and laminated veneer lumber (LVL) manufacturer Focus Lumber Bhd, which made its debut on the Main Market of Bursa Malaysia yesterday, was the most actively traded stock and closed with a 97% premium at RM1.18.

Its share price gained 58 sen with 40.29 million shares changing hands. Its initial public offering price was 60 sen.

The company said its business growth would be driven by the continuous demand in the global market for plywood due to its widespread usage.

“Our products are mainly exported overseas. For our financial year ended Dec 31, 2010 (FY10), 87.5% of our total revenue was derived from exports,” said Focus Lumber founder and managing director Lin Fong Ming.

He added that the company planned to invest in new and advanced machinery to enhance its manufacturing process.

Plywood is the main revenue contributor to the company, making up 95.2% of the company’s revenue last year.

As part of their growth strategy, Focus Lumber commissioned a production line for LVL in early 2010, aimed at helping the company diversify into different product market segments. LVL, which is made of recycled wood waste, is becoming more widely used. For FY10, the company recorded a revenue of RM120.4mil, up 17.67% from RM102.3mil earned in FY09. The pre-tax profit for 2010 was RM10.2mil.

Established in 1989, some of the company’s markets included the United States, Taiwan, South Korea, Singapore, Australia, China, India and Mexico.
