Guan Eng wants assembly sitting shown live

GEORGE TOWN: Penang wants to be the first state in the country to broadcast its state assembly proceedings live over RTM.

A formal request would be made to RTM today, chief minister Lim Guan Eng said after the investiture ceremony at Dewan Sri Pinang yesterday.

“Unofficially, we have already told the station. The state assembly will start from July 21 and we welcome live coverage.

“Of course, if they feel that it is too long, they can show parts of it.

“The purpose is to allow the public to see democracy in action,” he said, adding that the live broadcast was in line with the state government’s CAT (competency, accountability and transparency) initiative.

“This is Pakatan Rakyat’s first sitting. My hope is that everyone will unite regardless of political leanings so that we can work for the benefit of all Penangites.

“If RTM does not want to broadcast the proceedings, we will look at other alternatives, like a web telecast,” he said, adding that other television stations were also welcome to broadcast the proceedings.

The recent Perak state assembly sitting was telecast live over the Internet at the official state government website.

At the press conference, the state’s ad hoc information committee head Abdul Malik Abdul Kassim also announced that journalists only need present their media identification cards issued by the Ministry of Information for easy access to all government offices at Komtar.

“Previously, reporters had to surrender their personal identification documents in exchange for a pass to enter the building. This new ruling is to cut red tape and give the media easier access to government officials,” he said, adding that the committee had received many proposals from the media to create a culture of freedom of information for all.

“We had our first meeting recently and are now in the process of scrutinising the proposals,” he said.A total of 340 state awards were conferred in conjunction with Yang di-Pertua Negri Tun Abdul Rahman Abbas' birthday yesterday.
