Indonesian, Aceh govts to support Myanmar peace efforts

Banda Aceh (ANTARA) - Indonesia’s Foreign Ministry plans to work with the Aceh provincial government to support diplomatic efforts aimed at helping Myanmar end its long-running internal conflicts, a senior diplomat said Thursday.

“We at the Foreign Affairs Ministry have been striving to help stakeholders in Myanmar reach a peace agreement,” ministry official Muhammad Anshor said during a meeting with Aceh Governor Muzakir Manaf in Banda Aceh.

In a statement released Friday, Anshor said the ministry seeks to provide a safe and neutral platform for dialogue among Myanmar’s warring parties, who he noted have yet to show readiness to compromise for peace.

Myanmar has seven states with diverse ethnic communities, many of which remain outside the control of the military junta, he added.


Anshor said Indonesia plans to host a dialogue in Yogyakarta in late November, bringing together about 20 representatives from ethnic groups and five from the Myanmar government.

He said Aceh, which successfully ended decades of civil conflict through peace talks, could offer valuable lessons in reconciliation and conflict resolution.

“The conflicting sides are eager to learn from Indonesia’s experience, especially Aceh’s peace process. They want to understand the causes of conflict and how reconciliation was achieved amid diversity,” he said.

Anshor expressed hope that Governor Manaf would attend the Yogyakarta dialogue to share Aceh’s peace experience. 

He also said representatives from Myanmar’s military junta are scheduled to visit Aceh on November 29–30 after the meeting to observe the province’s post-conflict recovery.

Governor Manaf welcomed the ministry’s initiative, affirming Aceh’s readiness to share insights from its three-decade conflict, which ended with a peace agreement signed in Helsinki, Finland, on August 15, 2005.
