Jakarta (ANTARA) - Coordinating Minister for Infrastructure and Regional Development Agus Harimurti Yudhoyono declared sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) as the future of global aviation and a critical component of national decarbonization efforts.

Speaking at the Indonesia Zero Emission Heavy-Duty Vehicle (IZEHDV) Summit 2026 in Jakarta on Thursday, the minister, widely known as AHY, said the government is preparing to mandate the use of SAF starting in 2027.

"This is the future of global aviation. If we start moving in that direction, this can also contribute significantly to overall emission reductions," AHY said before industry leaders and policymakers.

He noted that global adoption of SAF is accelerating due to its advantages over conventional jet fuel, particularly its potential to significantly reduce greenhouse gas emissions in the aviation sector.

The planned transition is part of a broader government roadmap to balance economic growth with environmental sustainability and carbon reduction commitments.

To support the transition, the government is implementing decarbonization strategies focused on improving energy efficiency, transitioning energy sources, and strengthening resource management across the national aviation sector.

AHY added that these measures will also extend to airport ecosystems, with the government actively promoting the development of "net-zero emission airports" through green infrastructure and clean technology integration.
