Indonesia tightens safety rules for app-based transport drivers

Jakarta (ANTARA) - Indonesia’s Transportation Ministry is strengthening safety standards for app-based transport services to improve compliance, oversight and the quality of reliable and sustainable mobility, Transportation Minister Dudy Purwagandhi said Tuesday.

“Safe driving is important, especially for app-based drivers who serve the public’s daily mobility needs,” Purwagandhi said during a safety training session at Jatijajar Terminal in Depok, West Java.

Grab Indonesia organized the training with the Land Transportation Directorate General and the Indonesian Motorcycle Industry Association for 1,052 two-wheeled driver partners across five cities.

“Every day, millions of people entrust their journeys to drivers. Everyone expects the same thing: a smooth trip and to reach their destination safely,” Purwagandhi said.

Safety should not be viewed merely as regulatory compliance but must become part of every driver’s work culture to ensure each journey ends safely, he said.

Every public journey should end safely, rather than merely on time, he said, adding that safety must become part of drivers’ daily work habits.

“Safety must become a work habit, not merely a slogan. Traffic discipline, respecting road users, maintaining vehicles and prioritizing service ethics are non-negotiable responsibilities,” he said.

The government and Grab have agreed on a new transaction-settlement policy taking effect Aug. 1, 2026, under which transactions on the Grab application will be settled the same day.

The change means financial transactions will no longer be settled the following day, according to the ministry.

“We hope transactions will become more transparent and faster while reducing confusion among driver partners,” Purwagandhi said.
