Indonesia pushes stronger job-loss insurance for laid-off workers

Jakarta (ANTARA) - Indonesia's Ministry of Manpower reaffirmed its commitment to continuously enhancing protection services for workers, including Job-Loss Insurance (JKP) scheme for laid-off employees.

"Among the mitigation steps we are taking, the first is definitely regarding the JKP, the Job-Loss Insurance. We are continuously improving our services," Anwar Sanusi, head of the ministry's Development and Planning Agency, said in Jakarta on Wednesday.

He underscored JKP is a critical social cushion for laid-off workers, with benefits including cash assistance of 60 percent of wage for up to six months under applicable regulations, as well as access to labor market information, job training, and career counseling.

"The JKP is vital. First, it provides a cash benefit that workers can utilise during the waiting period while looking for a new job," Sanusi said.

Beyond serving as a vital component of the social protection ecosystem, JKP also backs the strengthening of the skills and career readiness of Indonesian workers.

"The beneficiaries receive job training for both reskilling and upskilling. Then, they gain access to and guidance regarding employment services, such as information on open job vacancies," he added.

Therefore, the ministry encourages workers to familiarise themselves with JKP eligibility criteria, so they do not miss out on these services.

Among the requirements, the beneficiaries must be Indonesian citizens, wage earners, under 54 years old at the time of registration, and enrolled in the BPJS Kesehatan national health insurance programme.

Additionally, employees at micro and small enterprises must be registered under the insurance programmes of the workers' social security agency, BPJS Ketenagakerjaan, covering occupational accident, death, and old-age benefits.

Meanwhile, workers at medium and large enterprises must be enrolled in these three programmes, plus the pension scheme.
