Govt secures land, reservoirs for 30-GW solar power development​

Jakarta (ANTARA) - The government has identified thousands of hectares of state land and major water reservoirs as potential sites for a massive 30-gigawatt (GW) solar power rollout, Deputy Minister of Energy and Mineral Resources (ESDM) Yuliot Tanjung said.

"In preparation for the 30-gigawatt project, we have also identified government land that can be utilized, including land managed by the Land Bank under the Ministry of Agrarian Affairs and Spatial Planning/National Land Agency (ATR/BPN)," Yuliot said after the Indonesia Sustainable Energy Week (ISEW) 2026 event in Jakarta on Wednesday.

"We are also utilizing reservoirs," he added.

According to Yuliot, the ATR/BPN Ministry has identified approximately 9,000 hectares of state-managed land that is ready to be used for solar power installations.

Beyond land-based sites, floating solar technology on existing reservoirs will also play an important role.

Yuliot confirmed that the Ministry of Public Works has issued a water resource utilization permit for the Saguling Reservoir, which is slated to host a floating solar power facility with a capacity of between 100 and 150 megawatts.

The identification of potential sites marks an initial operational step following President Prabowo Subianto's announcement of plans to develop 30 GW of solar power capacity (PLTS) while retiring 13 GW of diesel-fired power plants (PLTD).

Detailing the policy during his address on the 2027 Draft State Budget last week, President Prabowo described the transition to solar power as an important step toward national energy independence and fiscal efficiency, particularly for remote regions.

"It makes no sense for our remote islands to continue waiting for ships carrying diesel fuel to obtain electricity. The economic costs are too," President Prabowo said, pointing out that Indonesia's year-round sunshine provides an abundant domestic energy resource.

By replacing diesel-dependent power generation in remote areas with localized solar generation, the government aims to reduce fuel costs while expanding access to clean energy across the archipelago.
