A-League : Phoenix extend unbeaten run, Adelaide held

Wellington Phoenix set a new A-League record for consecutive games unbeaten at home with a 2-2 draw against Melbourne Heart at Westpac Stadium. Chris Greenacre had given the hosts the lead but a John Aloisi penalty and a Matt Thompson strike turned the game on its head.

However, Leo Bertos equalised in the 60th minute to rescue a point and extend the Phoenix's unbeaten record at home to 24 games. Greenacre opened the scoring in the sixth minute when he slotted home after latching onto a pass from Manny Muscat but Heart hit back eight minutes later when Adrian Zahara had been fouled inside the area and Aloisi converted from the spot.

Heart, bidding for their first away win of the season, regained the lead in the 36th minute when Thompson capitalised on poor defending to fire home. But Bertos sealed a share of the spoils when he rifled a shot from outside the area into the back of the net on the hour mark.
Phoenix are sixth in the standings with 12 points while Heart are one place below on goal difference.

Meanwhile, A-League leaders Adelaide United were held to a goalless draw by Gold Coast United at Skilled Park. In a game of few goalscoring opportunities, Sergio van Dijk had the most noteworthy chance for either side when the Adelaide striker ballooned a header just over the crossbar early in the second half. The point extends Adelaide's advantage at the top of the standings to six points while Gold Coast climb to fourth.

Juan Martinez put the visitors in front after 38 minutes and Santiago Silva sealed the win seven minutes from time.

Friday's other game also finished 2-0, with home side San Lorenzo enjoying a comfortable win over Tigre.

Juan Carlos Menseguez opened the scoring after just three minutes and Sebastian Balsas (76) made certain of all three points.

The win takes San Lorenzo to fourth in the standings, ahead of Lanus on goal difference.

English Championship : Ecclestone reveals lack of interest in QPR

QPR might be sitting at the top of the Championship table, but owner Bernie Ecclestone said he is really not bothered.

"Yeah, it's good. Super, super, super. We can only go down from here," he told the Guardian. Asked if he has any enthusiasm for the club he replied: "Not at all. Of course I can pull out, but there are lots of things that could and should be done there. It's mainly commercial things and for me to see if we can get that working better. Once you get me involved that's it. I'm there."

Ecclestone invested in QPR along with his friends Flavio Briatore and Lakshmi Mittal. "It's something I got involved in," he told the newspaper, "[but] not out of choice. I'm probably going to be even more involved shortly. It's a task that needs getting on with."

Asked if promotion to the Premier League would excite him, he smiled. "Half the people who get involved in football do it only to satisfy their ego. I suppose we all get caught up in that."

And he admitted that he once toyed with the idea of launching a bid for Arsenal. "I thought it would be nice if we could be in charge. It was a ****** thing to do. I'm very lucky I escaped because that would've been a 24-hours-a-day job. I only got involved a little bit because my daughter's boyfriend was David Dein's son. That's how it started."

World Cup champion Spain still No. 1

ZURICH -- World Cup champion Spain maintained its hold on the top spot in the FIFA rankings, while the United States slipped to No. 25 after having played only exhibition matches since last summer's tournament in South Africa.

Croatia and Russia returned to the top 10 following victories in 2012 European Championship qualifiers, and France bounced back into the top 20 after an historic low last month.

The Netherlands was second ahead of Brazil, which swapped places with fourth-ranked Germany. Argentina was fifth, followed by England.

Russia's wins over Ireland and Macedonia lifted it 15 spots to No. 10, dropping African champion Egypt into 11th place. Croatia was ninth.

Slovenia is at a best-ever No. 15, and Australia heads the Asian countries at No. 21.

Byron Moreno pleads not guilty

NEW YORK -- A former World Cup soccer referee arrested in New York City has pleaded not guilty to heroin-smuggling charges.

Prosecutors allege Byron Moreno was caught in September at Kennedy Airport with bags of heroin attached to his body. He appeared Wednesday in Brooklyn court.

Moreno made some controversial decisions in a 2002 second-round match in which South Korea eliminated Italy. Players and officials from Italy had long labeled some of his calls suspicious.

Soccer's governing body, FIFA, has said Moreno's arrest appears to be "completely unrelated" to the sport.

Moreno's next court date is Dec. 3.

Europa League Preview : Napoli v Liverpool

Mazzarri looking for Euro boost

Napoli coach Walter Mazzarri, like his opposite number Roy Hodgson, accepts his priority has to be domestic form but that will not stop his side seeking to gain a significant Europa League advantage.

The Italian club host Liverpool at the Stadio San Paolo hoping to take a big step towards qualification from Group K. Their form this season has been encouraging - they are currently fourth in Serie A - and considerably better than Liverpool's, who have slipped to second-bottom of the Barclays Premier League.
Liverpool's form in Europe has been much better, with five wins and a draw through both qualifying and the group stage so far.

Napoli, like their opponents, are trying to recapture former glories and Mazzarri believes facing teams like Liverpool can only help in that quest. They drew their opening two games against Utrecht and Steaua Bucharest but Liverpool pose the biggest threat.

"Playing an important side like Liverpool is another step for the club to grow,'' he said. "We have to hold up Napoli's name though, but without forgetting about the league, which is our primary objective. "But having said that, we will give our maximum because we really want to get through the group.''

Despite Liverpool's troubles this season, and the fact they have left key duo Fernando Torres and Steven Gerrard at home, Mazzarri is taking nothing for granted.

"They have a great squad. An individual is not able to dictate the team's strengths,'' he added. "I'm more worried because it's clear (Roy Hodgson's) studied a line-up that could give us more problems. "I want a great match. I would like the team to play good football and produce a positive performance. "I don't want only to secure a good result. I want to achieve it in the best possible fashion. "We want to give happiness to our supporters and we will play with soul, regardless of the possible outcome.''

Liverpool boss Roy Hodgson has defended his squad selection ahead of the game. He has chosen to rest Torres, Gerrard, Raul Meireles and Lucas Leiva, while he is also without Glen Johnson (hamstring), Daniel Agger (illness) and Dirk Kuyt (ankle). The 63-year-old admitted his decision was coloured by the fact the team were in desperate need of a win against Blackburn in the Premier League on Sunday.

"I was concerned that if players like Lucas Leiva and Raul Meireles were to play it would be five matches in two weeks,'' said Hodgson, who admitted it was a risk. "And when it comes to Steven Gerrard and Fernando Torres - two important players - we have an important league game on Sunday.
"For me it was, quite simply, a priority. After our very poor start to the season and bad results, if we had to make a sacrifice within the team in one game or another, in which game do you make it?

"I made the decision to make the sacrifice in this game because we need a win more badly on Sunday than we do tomorrow (Thursday). "I wouldn't want to be in a situation where I played Gerrard and Torres and one of them got injured or were tired and our performance suffered. "If we then lose and people say we chose a weakened team because I prioritised Sunday over this game then I will hold my hands up and say they are right.''

Europa League : Gerrard and Torres miss Reds' trip to Naples

Steven Gerrard and Fernando Torres will stay on Merseyside when under-pressure Liverpool travel to Italy for Thursday's Europa League tie against Napoli. With the Reds sitting in the relegation zone after eight games in the Premier League, manager Roy Hodgson has clearly prioritised the weekend's tie against Blackburn Rovers. Glen Johnson (injury) and Daniel Agger (illness) are missing, while midfielders Lucas and Raul Meireles have also been given a rest. Christian Poulsen is back in the squad after missing the Merseyside derby defeat to Everton on Sunday. Prior to announcing his squad, Hodgson confirmed that the Europa League was currently a secondary consideration given Liverpool's league predicament.

"I'll leave some players out - that's for sure," Hodgson said. "Some of the more important senior players won't travel because their participation on Sunday is going to be so important to us.
"It's not just a question of playing three matches in a week - it's also a question of injury. I don't think our squad is so strong that I can afford to risk them. "But it'll still be a strong team we put out there and I think it's a chance for some players who have been on the fringes, like David Ngog, and others like Ryan Babel, who has had very few chances. "It's yet another opportunity for these players to blast their way into the team and force me to look at them in a different light, to make sure they are players that are first on the list and not down the pecking order."

The United States has announced its withdrawal from the race to host the 2018 World Cup. The USA had been in the running to stage either the 2018 or 2022 competition, but has now decided to focus solely on the latter.

The decision means there will definitely be a European host in eight years' time, with England and Russia remaining in the running along with joint bids by Belgium/Holland and Spain/Portugal. With FIFA statutes preventing two successive World Cups being held in the same continent, the race for the 2022 tournament will now be between Australia, Japan, South Korea, Qatar and the USA.

Chairman of the United States bid committee, Sunil Gulati, today said: "For some time we have been in conversations with FIFA and UEFA about the possibility of focusing only on the 2022 bidding process, an option we have made reference to many times. We are confident this is in the best interests of the USA bid.

"We wanted to make the announcement now - still 48 days before the final decision - in order to make our intentions clear during the last part of our campaign. This also enables FIFA to finalise the selection procedures during its upcoming scheduled executive committee meeting.''

That meeting will take place in Zurich on October 28 and 29. FIFA secretary general Jerome Valcke said: "We have had an open and constructive dialogue with the USA Bid for some time now, after it became apparent that there was a growing movement to stage the 2018 FIFA World Cup in Europe.

"The announcement of today by the USA bid to focus solely on the 2022 FIFA World Cup is therefore a welcome gesture which is much appreciated by FIFA.''

The United States decision means England's bid for the 2022 World Cup has been withdrawn, a formality given that the tournament will go to a non-European country, and its focus will now be on competing to host in 2018. A statement from the England bid team said: "England 2018/22 today confirmed to FIFA that it was withdrawing its candidature from the FIFA World Cup 2022 and will now focus on its bid to host the tournament in 2018.

"This followed consultation with UEFA president Michel Platini on the most appropriate moment to withdraw. England 2018 is delighted it is now clear the FIFA World Cup will be coming to Europe in 2018 following the withdrawal of the United States bid.''
