FXTM’s Big Wave Dinner & Beach Clean Make a Splash
On 18 May, FXTM’s Touchdown in Cape Town: The Big Wave series of events landed in South Africa’s Mother City – Cape Town. The series kicked off with two spectacular events, the Big Wave Opening Dinner and the Diep River Lagoon beach clean, which brought together the local community to learn more about protecting the oceans, and take action together.
The Big Wave Opening Dinner* was truly “jawesome”. Against the striking backdrop of the Two Oceans Aquarium’s predator exhibit, with six sharks circling in the background throughout the evening, the packed room of nearly 70 enthusiasts and traders were captivated by motivational speeches from FXTM’s Head of Education, Andreas Thalassinos and UN Patron of the Oceans, Lewis Pugh.
Highlights of the evening include:
- The two motivational experts sharing inspirational anecdotes, teaching attendees the importance of education, determination and perseverance.
- Show-stopping entertainment, including a spectacular act by two Zulu dancers decked in FXTM brand colours.
- The award presentation for Gregg Daly, second-place winner of the Big Wave Trading Contest (under Exinity Limited).
- Delicious food, a fully engaged audience and the perfect opportunity for attendees to network with one another in a truly memorable setting.
Lewis Pugh, a Cape Town local, was amazed at the diversity in the audience and how interested they were in the educational aspect of trading. He commented: “I’ve never seen anything quite like it in South Africa.”

Following on from the dinner, the Big Wave beach clean organised by Big Bay Events, took place on May 19 off the coast of Sunset Beach, right by the infamous Diep River area in Cape Town. Over 100 Capetonians joined Team FXTM and Brand Ambassador Lewis Pugh in ridding the beach of harmful plastic and waste.
Families from across the region (some of whom even brought their dogs along!) joined together to collect and dispose of waste that might otherwise endanger the lives of marine life. It was a truly wonderful outdoor community experience, with many kids who are part of a youth development programme joining in.
After the clean-up, attendees enjoyed well-earned food and live music from one of South Africa’s famous DJ Milkshake.

We were also thrilled to welcome members of the Velokhaya Cycling Team, who FXTM were proud to sponsor during the Cape Town Cycle Tour Race on the 10 March. The team were excited to learn more about both FXTM and forex trading itself.

The Big Wave Triumphantly Concludes with the Lighthouse Swim
FXTM’s original series of educational events – Touchdown in Cape Town: The Big Wave – concluded with the sponsored Lighthouse Swim. Supporting this extreme and challenging swim was a fantastic way to end the unique series of Big Wave events in Cape Town.
The Lighthouse Swim, hosted by Big Bay Events, took place on 26 May. It was an extreme 10km swim which commenced at the Milnerton Lighthouse before heading north to Big Bay itself. While this event was designed for more advanced swimmers, there was also an opportunity for the less experienced to join in with a relay option.
Thirty enthusiastic swimmers gathered for this event, supported by over 100 encouraging spectators who cheered them on all the way. Despite the vast distance, everyone completed the race successfully and in good time. The brave participants also informed us that, while it was a difficult swim, it was well worth the challenge!
Big Bay Events are the founders of the ‘Splash and Make a Difference’ programme, which received the proceeds from the Lighthouse Swim. This fantastic project provides swimming lessons and drown-proofing to disadvantaged communities, encouraging children to develop a love of safe swimming. FXTM was honoured to sponsor such an important cause as their values and respect for community naturally align with our own.
The Big Wave has been an absolutely brilliant experience for FXTM and we hope our participants thoroughly enjoyed each and every event as much as we did. Particularly significant highlights included both the Big Wave Dinner and the Beach Clean with UN Patron of the Oceans and FXTM Brand Ambassador Lewis Pugh, as well as our Head of Education’s signature Ultimate Trading Formula workshop* – all of which allowed us to spread our passion for trader education while simultaneously connecting with the local community.
FXTM would like to thank everybody for helping to make the Big Wave such a unique experience, especially those who joined us at these events.
