Education ministry, police expand AI literacy training for students

Jakarta (ANTARA) - Indonesia's Education Ministry and National Police are expanding cooperation to promote AI literacy among students through preventive education, seeking to improve digital skills while encouraging safe and responsible technology use.

The commitment was formalized Wednesday in Jakarta through an agreement establishing a framework for Training of Trainers (ToT) under the “Paham AI” (AI Literacy) program.

Tatang Muttaqin, the ministry's director general for secondary and special education, said rapid digital transformation was reshaping how people think.

Artificial intelligence, he said, offers major opportunities to improve education quality and productivity.

But technological advances also pose risks, including misuse, cybercrime, disinformation, privacy breaches and ethical challenges in AI use.

Under the program, personnel from 12 provincial police forces will be trained to instruct senior and vocational high school students in their respective regions.

“Digital competence goes beyond technical skills. Building digital character is equally important so students can use AI wisely and maximize its benefits,” Tatang said.

He also stressed the importance of cooperation among all parties to build a safe digital ecosystem.

Indarto, head of the National Police's Technology and Communication Bureau, said the ToT program was designed as a long-term effort to improve AI literacy among students and teachers.

The initiative is crucial, he said, because young people's adoption of AI is advancing much faster than regulatory frameworks.

“This creates an opportunity to build trust between police and students. We must act early through prevention, serving as educational partners and facilitators for teachers and students,” he said.

Through the initiative, the ministry and police are strengthening AI literacy in schools to prepare young people for continued digital transformation.

The cooperation aims to help Indonesia's youth become not only proficient in using AI, but also wise, ethical and responsible in its application.
