Benitez: United still European favourites
Friday, March 20, 2009
Rafael Benitez maintains that holders Manchester United are now favourites to retain the Champions League crown. The Liverpool boss was reacting to Friday's quarter-final draw which has paired the Anfield club with Chelsea for the fifth season on the trot in this competition. If Liverpool get past that battle, they must play Barcelona or Bayern Munich in the semi-finals for the right to take part in the Rome final on May 27.

Mirror Chief Football Writer Martin Lipton
gives his verdict on the route to the Rome final
Quarter-Finals
Villarreal v Arsenal
This will be tight, tight and tight again with one goal either way likely to sway the outcome.
But Arsenal, with Fabreqas and A debay or back, should just have enough to edge it.
Verdict: Arsenal
Man Utd v Porto
This should be as easy as it looks on paper for the holders. Forget Jose Mourinho's Porto, this is more like the
team United hit for four a decade ago and a repeat
in the first leg would be no surprise.
Verdict: United
Liverpool v Chelsea
Second-leg home advantage has been decisive in the last three meetings and is likely to be again. Chelsea conquered the Anfield fear factor last season and could squeak it again.
Verdict: Chelsea
Barcelona v Bayern
The Catalans will fancy themselves to make the
second leg academic by taking advantage of Munich's
dodgy rearguard. They should have enough going
forward but Franck Ribery could hold the key.
Verdict: Barca
Semi-Finals
Manchester United v Arsenal
Fergie has kissed and made up with Arsene Wenger, but
he would love to get the better of his old foe and would expect just to shade it too, although Arsenal would take it the wire.
Barcelona v Chelsea
Style versus substance, but Chelsea's burning desire to finally get their hands on the biggest trophy of all could prove the decisive factor over two legs.
Final
Which would mean.... United v Chelsea in the final again.
