BNPB prioritizes logistics for remote islands after North Maluku quake

The National Disaster Mitigation Agency (BNPB) said it is focusing on meeting logistical needs in the most remote island areas, such as Mayau and Tifure, North Maluku, following an earthquake on Thursday (April 2).

“We have coordinated for the deployment of a State Search and Rescue (SAR) Vessel to support logistics distribution,” BNPB Director for Regional Handling I Agus Riyanto said here on Sunday.

In addition, he said, trauma healing assistance for residents affected by the earthquake is being provided by the Social Affairs Office with support from the Indonesian Military (TNI) and the Police.

He affirmed the central government’s readiness to fully support the emergency response period in North Maluku.

BNPB also emphasized that the mechanism for repairing houses damaged by natural disasters or social conflict will be processed in accordance with the regulations.

The coordination meeting concluded with a joint commitment from all government agencies to continue serving the public despite the national holiday.

Earlier, North Maluku Deputy Governor Sarbin Sehe stressed the importance of quick and integrated measures in responding to the impacts of the 7.6-magnitude earthquake that struck the region on April 2.

The quake affected four districts and two cities, covering 27 sub-districts and 46 villages, including Ternate City and Tidore City, as well as West Halmahera, North Halmahera, Central Halmahera, and South Halmahera districts.

Based on preliminary data, no fatalities have been reported, while one person sustained minor injuries.

Around two thousand people were affected, with 1,107 individuals, or 113 households, still staying in evacuation shelters.

Physical infrastructure damage included 99 houses severely damaged, 66 moderately damaged, and 139 lightly damaged.
