BNPB prioritises prevention through disaster-resilient village

Malang, East Java (ANTARA) - Indonesia's National Disaster Mitigation Agency (BNPB) emphasised that comprehensive disaster handling and prevention are top priorities under the Disaster Resilient Village (Destana) programme.

Speaking after the Good Practices Learning Workshop on Destana and Its Integration into the Village Planning and Budgeting System in Malang City, East Java, on Wednesday, Head of BNPB Suharyanto said the disaster response and prevention are crucial to minimising casualties and material losses.

"Here in Malang City, in our efforts to maintain and strengthen the Destana forum, we recognise that comprehensive disaster mitigation and prevention are very important factors. The losses caused by disasters are enormous," Suharyanto remarked.

He noted East Java is among the provinces in Indonesia with a relatively high disaster risk. According to BNPB data, East Java recorded 3,893 disaster incidents between 2016 and 2025, ranking third after West Java with 6,692 incidents and Central Java with 6,504 incidents.

The other provinces with the highest number of disaster incidents during the period were Aceh with 1,941 incidents, South Kalimantan (1,747), North Sumatra (1,652), South Sulawesi (1,550), West Sumatra (1,228), Riau (1,197), East Kalimantan (1,086), and South Sumatra (1,070).

Indonesia's disaster risk map classifies 30 provinces as having a moderate disaster risk and eight provinces as having a high disaster risk. Meanwhile, 363 districts and cities fall into the moderate-risk category, while 151 districts and cities are classified as high-risk areas.

Suharyanto said he does not want the Destana programme to become merely a forum without delivering real benefits for public safety and security.

He stressed Destana must be fully optimised for disaster handling, especially in providing accurate information to the public.

"It must be able to function when its area is threatened by disasters, especially the current threats of drought and forest and land fires," he remarked.
