Better Meme Token: Dogecoin vs. Shiba Inu

Better Meme Token: Dogecoin vs. Shiba Inu

Key Points

While the regulatory environment continues to improve in the crypto sector, many cryptocurrencies have significantly declined for the year. The prices of the meme tokens Dogecoin (CRYPTO: DOGE) and Shiba Inu (CRYPTO: SHIB) have decreased 39% and 38% this year, respectively. This could be due to concerns over a higher-for-longer interest rate environment, the ongoing trade war, or U.S. fiscal concerns. However, some consider this sell-off an opportunity to buy the dip. Which is the better meme cryptocurrency right now? Dogecoin or Shiba Inu?

Dogecoin: The original meme coin

Dogecoin pioneered the meme token movement. Billy Markus, a software engineer, and Jackson Palmer, a marketing professional, created Dogecoin in 2013 as a practical joke, based on an image of a Shiba Inu dog. Celebrities like Mark Cuban and Elon Musk eventually embraced the token.

The token's price peaked at $0.76 on the day Musk appeared on Saturday Night Live. However, this turned into a sell-the-news event, as Dogecoin hasn't traded that high since. Cryptocurrencies are difficult to predict because they don't generate cash flow or earnings. Many investors evaluate what makes a specific cryptocurrency unique, its use case, and how it could revolutionize something to increase the use of its tokens.

Dogecoin struggles because there isn't a strong use case for it. It has been used for tipping content creators, but other than that, it lacks distinct appeal. Unlike Bitcoin, there is no cap on the number of Doge tokens that can be created, minimizing its appeal from a supply and demand perspective.

Despite this, Dogecoin remains one of the 10 largest cryptocurrencies globally. Its significant online community support makes it more likely that Doge is here to stay.

Shiba Inu: A play on Dogecoin with differences

Shiba Inu started as a joke on a joke, arriving seven years after Dogecoin in 2020 and is named after Dogecoin's mascot. Although created for similar reasons as Dogecoin, there are distinct differences.

Dogecoin operates on its own network, while Shiba Inu was built as an ERC-20 token on Ethereum's blockchain. ERC-20 tokens are powered by smart contracts and follow similar protocols, having a total supply and rules for transfers and associated accounts. Shiba Inu's total supply of 1 quadrillion tokens has been reduced to about 589 trillion after one of Ethereum's co-founders burned most of the 50% supply sent to him.

In 2023, Shiba Inu launched Shibarium, a layer-2 blockchain on Ethereum's network to facilitate smoother, affordable transactions. Shibarium addresses Ethereum's network congestion and has enabled decentralized applications and non-fungible tokens in Shiba Inu's ecosystem.

Better buy: Dogecoin or Shiba Inu?

I wouldn't recommend buying either of these tokens. Neither presents a compelling use case or a notable technological advantage over other networks processing thousands of transactions per second. Both are also likely to remain highly volatile and unpredictable. However, if choosing one, it would be Shiba Inu because Shibarium offers more network use cases and better technology. There is also a finite supply of Shiba Inu, with tokens regularly being burned to reduce supply, even if overall supply remains high.
