Sharp Unveils LCD TVs With Built-In Blu-Ray

LAS VEGAS — Sharp on Wednesday introduced a family of new high-definition flat-panel LCDs that include a built-in Blu-Ray player.

Shipping February, Sharp's AQUOS BD series will be available in 16 different models ranging from 26 to 52 inches diagonally.

The three largest sizes feature a 120Hz refresh rate, meaning they refresh motion images two times faster than the normal 60Hz rate. That spells out to an "exceptionally clear and crisp picture when viewing fast-action images," said Bob Scaglione, Sharp's senior vice president of marketing, at the Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas.

The TVs display high-definition at 1080p resolution. The TVs also include a "dejudder" feature to reduce background motion noise.

"This product line represents the pinnacle of image quality," said Mike Troetti, Sharp's president of marketing.

The TVs will cost between $1,650 to $5,000, depending on size.

Blu-ray Recorder Sales Surpass DVD in Japan

Blu-ray vanquished its rival HD-DVD earlier this year to emerge as the next generation standard for high definition video storage.

In North America, though it continues to trail DVD as most consumers seem unwilling to trade their DVD players for a Blu-ray one.

Not so in Japan. Blu-ray disc recorders surpassed a 50 percent market share in the first week of November and outpaced sales of DVD disc recorders, says market research company GfK Retail and Technology. That compares to about 10 percent market share that they had just about a year ago.

Average sales price of Blu-ray recorders have been falling this year. In the first week of June 2008, the average price of a Blu-ray recorder was between the equivalent of $1,110 to $1,300. Now they are available at the sub-$1,000 level, says the firm.

Blu-ray disc recorders are replacing DVD recorders at about one-and-a-half times faster than DVD recorders replaced VHS recorders, says GfK.

One of the reasons for this quicker rate of change is the rise in sales of flat panel TVs, says GfK. Blu-ray recorders can record digital high definition broadcasting without any drop in quality, which has ostensibly helped accelerate demand for it.

Amex Announces Cheapish Sleekish Portable Blu-Ray Burner

Scrolling through the Google Shopping results for "Blu-ray burner" brings us to $200 before we find a device that will actually author the high-capacity disks. And that's the cheapest online price: The same Light-On unit is also listed for $380, So the new "Portable Blu-ray Super Multi Drive" from Amex looks like good value at $290.

What's more, it looks great. The sleek slot-loader will read and write Blu-ray, CD and DVD disks, hooks up to a USB 2.0 port and will even run on the power provided by that same port (there's a 5v DC adapter in the box if you need it).

With Blu-ray being the "Bag of hurt " it is, we'd certainly steer towards the external option rather than opting for a built-in laptop drive, especially as, once Blu-ray dies a quiet death, you'll still be left with a serviceable DVD and CD burner.

Pioneer Shows 16-layer 400GB Optical Disc

Storage is getting bigger, better and badder. Pioneer is showing a 16-layer 400GB Blu-ray read only optical disc at an ongoing fair in Taipei.

Each layer of the disc will have a 25GB capacity. The company has already shown a 16-layer Blu-ray disc player in the past and has said these latest discs will be compatible will all existing Blu-ray players.

Pioneer plans to have these read-only discs available by 2010, rewritable discs between 2010 and 2012 and a 1 TB disc in 2013.
