Exclusive – Ljungberg: Arsenal have lost their winning mentality

Former Arsenal star Freddie Ljungberg has told talkSPORT that he feels the club lack a winning mentality.

And to remedy this, the retired Swede recommends signing experienced players who have title winning credentials.

The Gunners haven’t won silverware in seven seasons and in the last two summers have sold Cesc Fabregas, Samir Nasri, Alex Song and Robin Van Persie.

And Ljungberg believes that, if the club want to start winning trophies again, they need to invest in their squad to supplement the talented youngsters already plying their trade at the Emirates.

He told the Weekend Sports Breakfast: “I’m a little bit worried. I would actually like to know if Arsene is getting the funding or not because [when I was there] we kept the best players and maybe added one in the summer like Gilberto Silva who had won the World Cup and made the squad stronger.

“I feel that’s not happening at the moment.

“Trying to attract people to come - that’s the problem - because we can’t say we’ll win the Premier League because we haven’t done it for a long time and that makes it even harder.

“It’s difficult but I personally think that they have so much talent that they should try and mix it up and get in some experienced players who have actually won something in Europe or with their national team and get that winning mentality back - but unfortunately that costs money.”

Arsene Wenger dah tidak relevan. Buatkan aku hilang semangat untuk tengoK game..

Anyway, aku tunggu game dengan liverpool. Kalau Arsenal berjaya menang, baru aku tarik semula kata2 aku kat Wenger. Anyway, Arsenal memang tak mampu jadi juara.. Top 4 maybe still boleh.

Top 4 pun aku rasa berat...tgk game mlm td,team yg besa2 main power,beli striker murah2 tp bole score goal..AW dh x relevan dgn Arsenal n BPL yg mencabar..aku rasa AW kena gi Liga Negara China baru sesuai..

Arsenal Legend, Bergkamp says Arsenal have no "Winning Mentality"

One of the best players in the premier league history and a member of the Invincibles of the olden day has spoken out about Arsenal and here is what he had to say:
“I’m not sure Arsenal have enough of that in their players, when the attitude becomes more important than the ability just to pass the ball,” he said. “I don’t know if the English mentality is missing a little bit. Sometimes I see their games and it’s always the same way of playing, a bit too predictable.”

When he was asked about the Arsenal, lineup he added:

“It needs to be more diverse. You need a few strong characters who can get the team going, in training as well as matches. You also need a few players who can make a difference in terms of scoring goals. I don’t feel there are enough of them,” Bergkamp told the Daily Telegraph.

Bergkamp also believes that Wenger will remain Arsenal manager for a long, long time:

“He can’t just let go. He would think he hasn’t finished there yet. He would want to finish on a high … so I think he will wait and push as hard as possible to achieve that before he leaves.”

“You can’t only depend on one or two players. When they’re having an off-day, you need someone else.”

Former Arsenal midfielder Patrick Vieira believes that the Gunners lack winning mentality

Former Arsenal midfielder, Patrick Vieira, has criticised his former employers for lacking the winning mentality since he left the club.

Vieira left the Gunners in 2005 to join the Italian Champions at that time, Juventus FC. The Frenchman is currently plying his trade with Manchester City and has made a handful of appearances for the club this season.

Vieira won three Premier League titles and four FA Cup’s for the North Londoners during his 9-year stay at the Highbury. He was also a part of the 2003/4 title winning team that did not lose a single game in the entire season, earning the tag of ‘The Invincibles’. Since his departure, the club has failed to win any major silverware and their six-year drought will continue this season should they fail to win the Premier League title.

The 34-year-old is still affectionate towards his former club but he feels that the Gunners do not have the right mentality to win the trophies.

Talking to the reporters, Vieira said:

"I still have warm feelings for Arsenal, but it's starting to become frustrating. They play the best football in England, yet they fail to win anything significant. I really enjoy watching them, but they lack the physicality to impose themselves. Arsenal don’t have the killer attitude that a team like Manchester United have.”

The former Inter Milan midfielder added that the current bunch of players at Arsenal is better than what Viera was used to playing with.

"[Tony] Adams, [Martin] Keown, [Nigel] Winterburn and [Ray] Parlour weren't as good with the ball as the current players, but they put their head where others won't even put feet."

Vieira believes that competition will increase in the next season and the Gunners need to spend to strengthen their weak areas if they are to have any chances of winning. The Gunner’s were in contention of winning all four trophies until March this season, but they saw themselves getting knocked out of three competitions in space of 12 days.

A poor run of recent form has seen them trail the Premier League leaders, Manchester United, by seven points.
