English seems to be the only common language between the United States and the United Kingdom. Despite this similarity, there is literally a world of differences between the two countries.

Different time zones, currencies and the location of the car's steering wheel are just some of the main differences. If we add a lot of traditions and customs to this, we will see that the gap widens even more. If you're thinking of visiting the UK, make sure you know what you're up against. It is best to arm yourself with knowledge. This will save you from embarrassment or, worse yet, jail time.

lethal weapons?

Police officers in the United States may carry weapons in dangerous circumstances to protect innocent people against hardened criminals. The same is not the case in the UK.

Although the police in the UK are equally responsible for protecting the innocent, they do not need to carry firearms. A special group, called Authorized Firearms Agents (AFO), is specially trained to handle risky situations. AFOs are the only ones authorized to carry weapons and apply excessive force if necessary.

Paid maternity leave

Despite being a developed country, the United States lags behind other nations in the maternity leave it offers to new mothers. The United States does not offer maternity leave to women who have just given birth. Mothers are entitled to 12 weeks of leave, but all of these weeks are unpaid.

Meanwhile, mothers in the UK enjoy 52 weeks of maternity leave. Most of this time is paid, and their job will be there when they return. Specifically, women can enjoy 39 weeks of paid leave, and there is a lot of flexibility regarding the conditions of this time off.

Tea time

The British love their tea. In fact, they like this concoction so much that they have created a specific time of day to drink it. In addition, they have been making tea for so long that they can be described as connoisseurs of it.

Despite technological advances, the British insist on preparing tea in the most traditional way possible. Their American counterparts bet on speed, not tradition. They prepare hot tea by putting it in the microwave. It is fast and easy. But the British consider these tea-making processes blasphemous.

There are no hidden fees

When shopping in the United States, the price listed on an item's label is not the price that customers actually pay. State taxes, for example, are included in the cost when paying at the register. All prices seen before purchase refer to what an item costs before taxes.

Things are different in the UK. The prices quoted are exactly the prices that are actually paid. There are no hidden fees to surprise unsuspecting consumers. Tourists unfamiliar with the rules in the United States are usually shocked at the money they have to shell out.

Master of the world?

Both the British and the Americans love the sport. Both countries revel in the thrill of victory and recoil in the throes of defeat. The difference lies in the way each country describes their favorite sports teams.

Americans refer to their winning sports teams as "champions of the world." However, this detail confuses the British because American sports teams only compete in America. An example is that of the Major League Baseball championships, which are called the World Series. However, apart from a Canadian team, only American teams can qualify.

The IPO

The United States offers its students a variety of private and public universities. Each student has the freedom to choose where she wants to study, as long as she can afford it. However, studying in the UK is a bit different.

Most UK universities are public educational institutions. There are also private institutions, but they are comparatively few. To be precise, there are only two: the University of Buckingham and a University College in London.

security is guaranteed

The British attach great importance to security. For them, prevention is better than cure. This applies even to the smallest details, such as electricity. If you want to use a hair dryer in the UK, pay attention to the plug.

A detail that should not be neglected is that British plugs are equipped with an on and off switch. This function is very useful for those who want to protect themselves against accidental fires or power outages. It may seem excessive to Americans, since such a device is not the norm in American homes.

No credit card fraud

American customers are used to paying whatever they want with their credit cards. When they eat in restaurants, they hand over their cards to the waiters without hesitation when paying their bills.

In the UK things work differently. When a British man hands a waiter his credit card, he expects the waiter to bring a credit card reader to the table. If not, they immediately become paranoid that their card details will be stolen. The Americans think this is too cautious, while the British think the American attitude is too arrogant.

The cost of medical care

In the event of a medical emergency, British citizens can call an ambulance and expect immediate assistance. They also expect to pay little or nothing for the service. On average, they pay about 7 pounds (about 13 dollars).

However, Americans experience things differently. An ambulance can cost hundreds of dollars. Sometimes the bill can reach $1,000. Sometimes the cost is more painful than the medical emergency, leading to the strange tendency for Americans to drive to the hospital in an emergency.
