106 passengers evacuated from burning ferry Putri Yasmin

Mataram, West Nusa Tenggara (ANTARA) - Mataram Search and Rescue (SAR) team has rescued 106 passengers aboard Putri Yasmin Ferry, which caught fire in Lombok Strait on Wednesday, and they were safely evacuated to Lembar Port in Lombok and Padangbai Port in Bali.

Head of the Mataram SAR Office, Muhammad Hariyadi, said the passengers were rescued by vessels belonging to the SAR agency, the Indonesian Navy, and the KMP Port Link—a ferry regularly serves the Lembar Port-Padangbai Port route.

"We deployed KN 220 Mataram, a Rigid Inflatable Boat (RIB), and a Rigid Buoyancy Boat (RBB) to the location to conduct the evacuation and coordinate with other vessels in the vicinity," Hariyadi remarked on Wednesday.

He mentioned 30 passengers were evacuated via KMP Port Link to Padangbai, 59 were evacuated by KN SAR Arjuna 220 to Lembar Port, and 17 were evacuated by a Navy vessel to Lembar.

The Mataram SAR Office joined forces with Denpasar SAR Office, which dispatched KN SAR Arjuna to support the operation. Meanwhile, SGi Air Bali deployed a helicopter for aerial monitoring and searching activities.

"Yes, our current focus remains on the evacuation," Hariyadi said.

The evacuation process involved the Indonesian Navy, West Lombok Police, Water and Air Police (Polairud), Lembar Port Harbormaster, the KMP PortLink II, passing yachts, and local fishermen.

Hariyadi explained the Putri Yasmin ferry caught fire in Lombok Strait, West Nusa Tenggara, on the early hours of Wednesday.

The fire was reported at 4:15 a.m. as the ferry was traveling from Padangbai Port toward Lembar Port. Upon receiving the emergency report at 4:39 a.m., the Mataram SAR Office promptly mobilised personnel to evacuate those aboard.
