Cryptocurrency firm Tether raises Juventus stake to over 10%
Cryptocurrency firm Tether said on Thursday it had further raised its stake in Italian Serie A soccer club Juventus to over 10%. The world's fourth-largest cryptocurrency company first invested in February in Italy's most popular soccer club, which is controlled by the Agnelli family through their investment company Exor. The new shareholding represents 6.18% of voting rights in the club, the statement said. "The investment reflects Tether's long-term commitment to Juventus' future and its confidence in the club's intrinsic value and growth potential," it added. The event will be held May 22 at the Trump National Golf Club in Sterling, Va. The 25 biggest Trump coin holders will also get an invite for a "special tour" along with a "private VIP reception with the President." The private dinner invitation...
Cryptocurrency campaigners call for Swiss central bank to hold bitcoin
Cryptocurrency campaigners have increased efforts urging the Swiss National Bank (SNB) to consider bitcoin, emphasizing the need for the bank to diversify its reserves amidst global economic challenges. Supporters initiated a referendum campaign to amend the Swiss constitution, mandating the SNB to include bitcoin alongside gold in its reserves. Luzius Meisser, a campaigner and board member of Bitcoin Suisse, stated that holding bitcoin is sensible as global dynamics shift, affecting the dollar and euro. He argued that bitcoin could provide the SNB autonomy from political pressures on its foreign currency holdings, predominantly in dollars and euros, and highlighted the cryptocurrency's resistance to inflationary pressures common with...
Coinbase waives fees on PayPal’s stablecoin in crypto payments push
Coinbase, the largest publicly traded cryptocurrency exchange, is waiving fees on transactions connected to PayPal's stablecoin and allowing its users to redeem the token directly for U.S. dollars, a major milestone for PayPal as the company doubles down on crypto payments. The move is part of a joint effort by Coinbase and PayPal to increase the adoption of PayPal's stablecoin, called PYUSD, which it launched in 2023. PayPal says the integration with Coinbase will allow merchants on its network to settle directly in PYUSD instead of traditional financial rails. Stablecoins, a type of cryptocurrency designed to maintain a constant value, usually a 1:1 dollar peg, are commonly used by crypto traders to move funds between tokens. Their...
Bitcoin Traders Eye Long Term BTC Accumulation by Selling Put Options
Bitcoin (BTC) traders are engaging in a strategy similar to offering insurance by selling BTC put options in the Deribit-listed market, reflecting bullish price expectations. This involves selling put options, which act as insurance against price drops, in exchange for a small upfront premium. Traders are doing this in a cash-secured manner by holding stablecoins to ensure they can buy BTC if necessary. This strategy allows traders to collect premiums and potentially accumulate bitcoin if options are exercised, showcasing a long-term bullish sentiment. "There is a notable increase in cash-secured put selling using stablecoins," said Deribit's Asia Business Development Head Lin Chen. Additionally, BTC holders are selling higher strike...
Revolut profits soars on crypto boom as CEO lifts stake
LONDON (Reuters) - Revolut's pretax profit surged 149% last year to 1.1 billion pounds ($1.46 billion) as the financial technology firm experienced significant gains in crypto trading and earned more from interest rates and card fees. Revenue at the London-based fintech rose to 3.1 billion pounds, up from 1.8 billion pounds in 2023. This growth was driven by income from higher interest rates, card payments, and the company's "Wealth" segment, which includes trading and crypto products. Revolut has risen to prominence as the most successful European fintech with a digital-only model founded in the past decade. Valued at $45 billion last year, it is challenging high street lenders by expanding into mortgages and consumer lending, in...
Bitcoin’s April Rally Driven By Institutions, While Retail Flees ETFs: Coinbase Exec
Bitcoin's (BTC) breakout to $93,000 is being driven by deep-pocketed institutions, not retail exchange-traded fund (ETF) buyers, said Coinbase Institutional's John D’Agostino on CNBC. The rally began in early April, as institutional investors and sovereign wealth funds quietly accumulated BTC with their "patient pools of capital" while retail investors were still pulling capital from spot ETFs. “Institutions, sovereigns, patient pools of capital were piling in,” he said. “Retail via the ETF were exiting. So you’ve got to ask yourself, what do the institutions know?” That institutional conviction is now being formalized. Earlier this week, Strike CEO Jack Mallers and Cantor Fitzgerald’s Brandon Lutnick unveiled Twenty One Capital, a...
$635 Million Liquidated in 24 Hours as Bitcoin Surpasses $94,000, Fueling Predictions of a $100,000 Short Squeeze
Bitcoin crossed $94,000 on April 23, triggering liquidations worth $635.9 million across crypto markets in 24 hours. According to CoinGlass data, more than $560 million of that came from short positions. Bitcoin led the way with $230 million in shorts wiped out, while Ether followed with $109 million as its price rose to $1,787, almost a 10% gain. Binance was the exchange with the highest share of liquidations in a recent four-hour window, totaling $18.7 million, of which 78% were short positions. Bybit and OKX also reported high volumes of liquidated positions, pointing to broad market volatility. The surge in liquidations came as Bitcoin climbed to a 45-day high, reaching $94,236 at the time of reporting, with a 6.29% increase over...
Michael Saylor Backs New SEC Chair Paul Atkins as Strategy Buys 6,556 Bitcoin Worth $555M
Michael Saylor, CEO of Strategy, publicly endorsed newly appointed SEC Chairman Paul Atkins, stating on April 23 that Atkins “will be good for Bitcoin.” The statement came days after Atkins was sworn in as the 34th chair of the SEC during a White House ceremony led by Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent. Atkins, who previously served at the SEC from 2002 to 2008, has a background in digital assets, including his role as co-chair of the Token Alliance and an advisor to the now-defunct crypto exchange FTX. Strategy, formerly MicroStrategy, recently added 6,556 BTC to its holdings for approximately $555 million, bringing its total to 538,200 BTC worth over $50.5 billion. Saylor also revealed that Strategy’s Bitcoin yield has reached 12.1%...
XRP Is Rising Today -- Is the Cryptocurrency a Buy?
XRP (CRYPTO: XRP) is moving higher thanks to some positive-looking developments on the macroeconomic front and a potential coin-specific catalyst trading. The cryptocurrency's token price was up 2.4% over the previous 24 hours of trading as of 5:45 p.m. ET. Meanwhile, Bitcoin was up 2.7% over the last day, and Ethereum had risen 4.3%. After comments from President Donald Trump yesterday indicating that tariffs on Chinese products would come down substantially, Reuters reported today that the administration was open to lowering import taxes on the country's goods from 145% to between 50% and 65%. Adding another positive catalyst, President Trump seemed to back off his criticisms of Federal Reserve Chairman Jerome Powell and said that he...
Bitcoin, Ethereum, and Dogecoin Soar as "Risk On" Trade Continues
Investors continued to buy risk assets on Wednesday, including growth stocks, tech stocks, and cryptocurrencies, following a sharp move higher on Tuesday. As highly correlated assets, it's no surprise they're all up in unison today. The move in crypto is largely because of macroeconomic news, rather than anything about crypto itself. Bitcoin is up 2.9% since the stock market closed yesterday, Ethereum is up 5.1%, and Dogecoin is up 6.2%. The speculation today is that tariffs on imports from China will come down in short order after Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent said he expects a "de-escalation" in the trade war with China in the "very near future." It's the trade war that has caused concern that the U.S. will go into a recession...
Watch These Bitcoin Price Levels as Key $100K Level Back in Striking Distance
None Bitcoin (BTCUSD) rose again Wednesday to bring the closely watched $100,000 mark back into striking distance. The pioneer cryptocurrency, along with other risk-on assets, have rallied the past few days amid optimism that the White House could scale back its plans on tariffs after President Trump said the levy on China will be "substantially" below its current 145% level. Sentiment also received a boost after the president walked back recent rhetoric about firing Fed Chair Jerome Powell, shoring up confidence across financial markets that the central bank will retain its independence. While Bitcoin is well below its record high of $109,000 set in January, it has risen about 25% from its 2025 low set in early April, as investors...
Stock market today: Dow rises 400 points, Nasdaq gains 2.5%, but mega-rally fades in late trading
US stocks leapt higher Wednesday after President Trump said he has "no intention" of firing Fed Chair Jerome Powell, easing Wall Street fears over the central bank's independence. Trump also softened his tone on tariffs, hinting that eye-popping duty levels on Chinese imports would ultimately be scaled back. The S&P 500 (^GSPC) closed up nearly 1.7%, while the Dow Jones Industrial Average (^DJI) added more than 400 points, or about 1.1%. The Nasdaq Composite (^IXIC) led the gains, rising 2.5%. But stocks moved off bigger gains — the Nasdaq was at one point up over 4%, while the Dow had added roughly 1,100 points — after Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent told reporters there has been "no unilateral offer from the president to...
Cantor Fitzgerald partners with Tether, Bitfinex, and SoftBank to launch Bitcoin acquisition company
Cantor Fitzgerald, the financial services firm formerly led by U.S. commerce secretary Howard Lutnick, is the latest company to enter into the Bitcoin acquisition business. The company, which is now chaired by Lutnick’s son Brandon Lutnick, is using a special purpose acquisition company (SPAC) called Cantor Equity Partners to create a new company called Twenty One Capital. That company will be owned in part by stablecoin giant Tether, crypto exchange Bitfinex, and Japanese investment company SoftBank, and will be used to buy Bitcoin. As a publicly traded company, Twenty One would allow investors to access Bitcoin’s price movements without investing in the currency directly, similar to Michael Saylor’s Strategy. It also plans to...
Cantor Prepares $3 Billion Crypto Firm With Tether
Cantor Fitzgerald LP, Tether Holdings Ltd., and SoftBank Group are in talks to create a $3 billion vehicle that would integrate billions in cryptocurrency. Stablecoin giant Tether will contribute $1.5 billion of Bitcoin, while Tether-affiliated exchange Bitfinex and SoftBank plan to put in $600 million and $900 million of the cryptocurrency, respectively, according to a person familiar with the matter. The deal may be announced in the coming days. SoftBank declined to comment. Cantor, Tether, and Bitfinex didn’t immediately respond to requests for comment. The Financial Times reported on the talks earlier Tuesday. The deal resembles the business model of Michael Saylor’s Strategy, which turned from a software maker to a Bitcoin...
Bitcoin Rollup Citrea Deploys Bridge to Tackle Collateral Bottleneck of Using BTC in DeFi
A project aiming to expand Bitcoin's utility is tackling the collateral requirements of bridging the blockchain to programmable layer 2s. Rollup project Citrea deployed its Clementine Bridge on the Bitcoin testnet. The bridge uses the BitVM2 programming language to expand the provision for decentralized finance (DeFi) on Bitcoin, by using it to verify layer 2s and sidechains that are fully programmable in the way Bitcoin isn't. "A secure bridge between Bitcoin and a secondary layer has always been a bottleneck for using BTC in a programmable environment," Citrea said on Monday. Clementine is designed to solve this by providing a trust-minimized way to bridge bitcoin (BTC) for use in DeFi environments. The BitVM family of computing...
Crypto Investors: Avoid 3 Easily Missed Tax Mistakes Next Year
If crypto were a celebrity, you could describe its journey as a surprising rise from obscurity to cult classic to mainstream appeal, and you could even go so far as to say it’s in danger of being overexposed. Members of the first family even launched their own meme coins earlier this year to decidedly mixed reactions. Now, everyone’s paying attention to cryptocurrencies — including the Internal Revenue Service. Tax agencies worldwide are ramping up their abilities to track crypto transactions, and it’s happening right here at home, too. Crypto investors need to understand the tax liabilities of their favorite digital assets, because the government certainly does. It’s not as easy to avoid scrutiny or keep your crypto activities...
Bitcoin rises close to $94,000 as the crypto rally continues
Bitcoin continued its torrid trading streak, flirting with $94,000 on Wednesday morning, despite a robust stock market rally. Some investors have been pulling money out of stocks and stashing it in gold and crypto, which have sent the values of both soaring. Analysts remain bullish on Bitcoin and how high it could go. Robert Kiyosaki, investor and Bitcoin expert, tweeted on April 20, “BITCOIN is $84k today. Strongly believe Bitcoin will reach $180k to $200k in 2025.” Kiyosaki is not alone in his thinking. “There is high short-term uncertainty, but we see solid foundations for a further rally in Bitcoin’s price over the coming months — $90,000 was just the first domino; in our view, Bitcoin is likely to move well beyond previous highs...
Stock market today: Dow, S&P 500, Nasdaq soar as Trump softens stance on Powell, China tariffs
(Source: Yahoo Finance) US stocks rallied Wednesday after President Trump said he has "no intention" of firing Fed Chair Jerome Powell, easing Wall Street fears over the central bank's independence. Meanwhile, Trump also softened his tone on tariffs, hinting that eye-popping duty levels on Chinese imports would ultimately be scaled back. The S&P 500 (^GSPC) was up 3%, while the Dow Jones Industrial Average (^DJI) added roughly 1,000 points, or over 2.5%. The Nasdaq Composite (^IXIC) led the gains, soaring 4.2%. The rally took another leg higher after the Wall Street Journal reported that China's tariff rate is expected to fall from 145% to 50%-65%. Trump told reporters from the Oval Office on Tuesday that he "never did" intend to...
Bitcoin ETFs Experience $936 Million Surge in Inflows Amid Safe Haven Trends
U.S. spot Bitcoin exchange-traded funds (ETFs) experienced a substantial influx of capital, with net inflows totaling $936 million on Tuesday, marking the largest single-day increase since Jan. 17. This surge reflects a growing interest among institutional investors in Bitcoin as a potential hedge against economic and geopolitical uncertainties. The recent inflows were distributed across 10 Bitcoin ETFs, with notable contributions from Ark & 21Shares, which saw $267.1 million, followed by Fidelity's FBTC with $253.8 million, and BlackRock's IBIT, which attracted $193.5 million. Over the past three days, U.S. Bitcoin funds have witnessed net inflows exceeding $1.4 billion. Analysts indicate that the interest in Bitcoin is driven by...
