DOPEY cops sparked a major alert when they were sent to investigate explosives - and took them back to their nick.
Two officers loaded the cache of plastic explosives, dynamite and ammunition into their patrol car boot.

The pair - one a rookie with just two days' experience, the other a PC with an Army background - then drove them to Croydon Police Station, South London.

But terrified workmates called the bomb squad when they found out.

A colleague said: "What a pair of idiots. They just drove into the station car park with the plastic explosives and dynamite.

"They should have left the explosives at the scene. The PC who was in the Army should have known better.

"The situation is so bad it is almost funny."

A controlled explosion had to be carried out at a nearby playing field - attended by three fire engines, three police cars, a police van and two ambulances. The explosives had been found by a removal company during a house clearance.

Inspector Graham Foster said they were military munitions from the Second World War.

He added: "Experts told us they sweat nitro-glycerine - so they were not happy to transport them any great distance."
