Indonesia's food security remains secure amid El Nino, minister says

Ambon (ANTARA) - Indonesia’s food security remains secure despite the potential impact of El Nino on production and supplies, Coordinating Minister for Food Affairs Zulkifli Hasan said on Thursday.
Hasan cited ample supplies of rice, fish, eggs and chicken, saying commodity availability remains a key indicator of national food security.
Government data show Indonesia’s national rice reserves stood at about 5.25 million tons as of August 2026, providing a substantial buffer for domestic demand.
Rice production in 2026 is projected at 34.77 million to 38.6 million tons, while domestic demand is estimated at about 31.10 million tons.
Based on those projections, Indonesia could record a rice surplus ranging from 3.67 million to 7.50 million tons in 2026.
The government has distributed nearly 1.9 million tons of Government Rice Reserves, known as CBP, during 2026 to maintain food availability and price stability.
The Food Supply and Price Stabilization program, or SPHP, has also continued, with rice distribution reaching about 731,000 to 952,000 tons.
Hasan said the government is taking precautionary measures against risks to food security, including changing weather patterns and global geopolitical conditions.
The government will continue protecting food supplies and distribution to ensure domestic needs are met, Hasan said.
He expressed confidence that Indonesia’s food supply would remain secure despite potential disruptions from weather and global conditions.
