Indonesian marines join RIMPAC drills in Hawaii

Jakarta (ANTARA) - Indonesian Navy marines joined troops from Malaysia, Fiji, Peru, Sri Lanka and the Philippines in the US-hosted Rim of the Pacific (RIMPAC) exercise, taking part in air assault and urban combat drills in Hawaii.

The multinational training has been underway at the Bellows Marine Corps Training Area near Honolulu since Friday, June 26, Marine Corps Information Office Head Colonel Rana Karyana said on Monday.

"Indonesian Marines participated in air assault operations and close-quarter battle (CQB) drills alongside personnel from other participating countries," Karyana said.

He said the air assault exercise simulated operations using an MV-22 Osprey aircraft, covering mission stages from landing through ground combat.

"The exercise is expected to strengthen rapid air-to-ground infiltration, tactical mobility and the seizure of strategic objectives with air support," Karyana said.

The CQB drills focused on enhancing Indonesian marines' close-combat capabilities, he added.

"The drills covered area clearance, team coordination, rapid decision-making and tactical responses to threats in urban environments," Karyana said.

Karyana said the opening phase of the training was successful, with Indonesian marines demonstrating strong operational capabilities.

He said Indonesian personnel remain ready to participate in multinational military exercises, including RIMPAC.

Indonesia deployed 35 marines to the exercise after completing a series of pre-deployment training programs.

The preparations included marksmanship training in South Jakarta on June 8 and air mobility and fast-rope exercises at Pondok Cabe Airfield in Tangerang, Banten, on June 20.
