Indonesia, Russia deepen IP partnership to boost innovation

Jakarta (ANTARA) - The Indonesian Ministry of Law said its partnership with Russia's intellectual property authority, Rospatent, will strengthen the national intellectual property (IP) ecosystem while opening new opportunities for Indonesian innovators to enter the Russian market.

Hermansyah Siregar, the ministry's Director General of Intellectual Property, said the signing of a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with Rospatent reflects the ministry's commitment to expanding its international network to enhance IP protection and utilization.

"Through this collaboration, we aim to strengthen capacity building, leverage technology, and create greater opportunities for Indonesian innovations and products to compete in the international market, including Russia," he said in a statement received in Jakarta on Thursday.

He noted that the MoU signed by the Directorate General of Intellectual Property and Rospatent in Geneva on Tuesday (July 7) serves as a foundation for strengthening IP cooperation between Indonesia and Russia.

In addition to the MoU, both parties agreed on several strategic initiatives, including cooperation on digital data utilization and patent analysis, capacity building in IP valuation, information exchange, and exploring the implementation of a Patent Prosecution Highway (PPH) to expedite patent examinations.

Indonesia and Russia also agreed to mutual support within the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO) forums. This includes supporting Indonesia’s proposal at the Standing Committee on Copyright and Related Rights (SCCR) and developing a multilingual system for international WIPO registrations.

Furthermore, the two nations will boost the protection of geographical indications by sharing experiences and best practices.

"We are optimistic that this MoU will bring tangible benefits to both countries," Siregar said.

As a follow-up, Rospatent invited Indonesia to participate in a project to develop an IP valuation website under the framework of the Committee on Development and Intellectual Property (CDIP).

In return, Indonesia invited Russia to attend the Global Forum on Cross-border Copyright Royalty Governance set to be held in Bali this October.

Siregar expressed hope that the collaboration would not only bolster the protection of creative works and innovations, but also accelerate the development of technology-based businesses and the creative economy, while expanding market access for Indonesian businesses.
