Indonesia, EU discuss readiness for 2026 halal mandate

Jakarta (ANTARA) - Indonesia and the European Union (EU) discussed regulatory developments and preparations for Indonesia's mandatory halal certification policy, which will take effect in October 2026, to help businesses prepare for the new requirements.

Indonesia's Halal Product Assurance Organizing Agency (BPJPH) said in a statement on Tuesday that the meeting was part of efforts to strengthen communication with international partners and ensure global stakeholders fully understand Indonesia's halal product assurance policy.

"We hope this meeting will serve as a forum to exchange information and discuss various policies related to the implementation of the Halal Product Assurance system," Deputy for Halal Product Assurance Development and Supervision at BPJPH E A Chuzaemi Abidin said.

BPJPH held the meeting with a European Union delegation in Jakarta last week. The delegation included representatives from embassies and trade institutions from Finland, Germany, Austria, France, Hungary, Poland, Spain, Belgium, and Denmark.

Chuzaemi said the discussion was intended to build a common understanding of Indonesia's halal product assurance policy while providing regulatory certainty to international trading partners ahead of the mandatory halal certification rollout.

He added that BPJPH remained committed to maintaining intensive communication so all stakeholders share the same understanding of the regulations and implementation mechanisms.

"BPJPH is committed to providing comprehensive explanations to all questions raised so there will be no misunderstanding regarding the implementation of Indonesia's halal policy," he said.

Meanwhile, Head of Trade and Economic Affairs at the European Union Delegation Carsten Sorensen said the visit aimed to obtain the latest information on Indonesia's regulations and policies to help businesses prepare for the mandatory halal certification requirement.

"The regulatory update is intended to help industries and related sectors prepare for the implementation of mandatory halal product assurance as stipulated under Indonesia's regulations," Sorensen said.

He added that clear and reliable information on Indonesia's halal regulations was essential for businesses and industries across European Union member states that maintain trade relations with Indonesia.
