Indonesia, Chile strengthen SPS cooperation to expand farm trade

Jakarta (ANTARA) - The Indonesian Quarantine Agency (Barantin) and Chile’s Ministry of Agriculture have agreed to strengthen sanitary and phytosanitary (SPS) cooperation to expand agricultural trade while respecting each other's health and safety requirements.

Barantin Secretary Shandra Hanitiyo co-chaired a meeting in Jakarta on Friday with Chilean Agriculture Undersecretary Fransesco Venezian, discussing cooperation in SPS information exchange, electronic certification, risk analysis, inspection, and laboratory capacity.

The meeting followed the signing of a memorandum of understanding on quarantine measures and certification cooperation in Chile in 2025, according to a statement cited here.

Hanitiyo emphasized that SPS cooperation had become increasingly important for both nations as they enjoy expansive trade ties, supported by the Indonesia-Chile Comprehensive Economic Partnership Agreement (IC-CEPA).

As per Trade Ministry records, bilateral trade amounted to US$277.4 million in the first half of 2026, with Indonesia enjoying a surplus of US$162.2 million. In 2025, Indonesia's exports stood at US$440.8 million out of total trade worth US$534.9 million.

Barantin reported that Indonesia also posted a surplus in animal, fish, and plant trade with Chile last year, with salmon oil among the main imports, serving as a raw material for fish feed to support the national aquaculture industry.

The agency emphasized the importance of maintaining high standards for animal and plant health as well as food safety to capitalize on bilateral trade opportunities.

Undersecretary Venezian welcomed cooperation between his ministry and Barantin, describing the partnership as essential to strengthening bilateral relations and facilitating safe trade in agricultural and fishery commodities.

Together with Barantin’s deputy for plant quarantine, he signed the Phytosanitary Requirements Protocol for the export of fresh fruit from Chilean fruit fly pest-free areas to Indonesia.

Barantin stated it would seek to translate bilateral cooperation into more concrete technical initiatives, including developing electronic certification, exchanging experience in biosecurity and pest and plant disease surveillance, and improving human resource capacity.
