Higher-ed Ministry, Pertamina team up for energy transition workforce​

The Ministry of Higher Education, Science, and Technology and state-owned oil and gas company Pertamina explored collaboration to strengthen human resources in supporting the energy transition through the development of new and renewable energy (NRE).

Minister of Higher Education, Science, and Technology Brian Yuliarto said in a statement here on Friday that strengthening human resources to support energy programs, like the 100-gigawatt (GW) solar power plant (PLTS) program, is important to meet workforce demand.

"One of the government's priority programs is to accelerate the reduction of fuel imports, especially for diesel power plants that still rely on diesel fuel. Along with the electrification policy, demand for solar power plants will continue to increase," Yuliarto said.

He also emphasized that the NRE development is expected to deliver the greatest possible benefits for Indonesia, both by strengthening energy security and by enhancing national industrial capacity and employment.

The ministry has been tasked with preparing various studies to serve as recommendations for the Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources (ESDM), state electricity company PT PLN, sovereign wealth fund Danantara, and other relevant stakeholders.

In this regard, the ministry provides input based on scientific studies, while the implementation of the programs remains under the authority of the relevant ministries.

"The findings can serve as input should there be opportunities for further development by relevant stakeholders," he said.

Meanwhile, Pertamina's Director of Transformation and Business Sustainability Agung Wicaksono outlined several of the company's initiatives to support the energy transition, including the development of solar power plants under the Dieselization Reduction Program.

He also mentioned other programs, such as developing geothermal energy and preparing vocational education to strengthen the energy sector's workforce.
