Gov't to provide housing compensation for disaster victims in Sumatra

Jakarta (ANTARA) - The government, through the Sumatra Post-Disaster Rehabilitation and Reconstruction Task Force, has prepared a housing compensation scheme for victims of flash floods and landslides in Aceh, North Sumatra, and West Sumatra.

Minister of Home Affairs and Task Force Chair Tito Karnavian said on Saturday that the compensation scheme is part of the government’s effort to reduce the number of evacuees living in emergency tents.

“The fewer people staying in tents, the closer the situation is to returning to normal,” Karnavian said during a coordination meeting broadcast on the House of Representatives’ YouTube channel.

Data from the National Disaster Mitigation Agency (BNPB) showed that 76,588 houses in the three provinces suffered minor damage. Meanwhile, 45,106 houses were moderately damaged, and 53,432 houses were classified as severely damaged.

Based on the assessment, the government has prepared a technical compensation plan covering three categories of damage, minor, moderate, and severe.

Under the scheme, households with minor damage will receive Rp15 million in compensation. Those with moderate damage will receive Rp30 million, while households whose homes were severely damaged will receive up to Rp60 million.

Karnavian said the compensation must be implemented immediately to reduce the number of evacuees, noting that prolonged stays in tents increase daily living costs and raise the risk of disease.

“It would be better for evacuees to leave the tents as soon as possible and move into temporary housing once it becomes available. They may stay with relatives or rent accommodation so the number of people in evacuation tents can be significantly reduced,” he said.
