MALAYSIA UNIVERSITY OF SCIENCE & TECHNOLOGY (MUST)

Establishment

In 1995, the then Prime Minister, Tun Dr. Mahathir Mohammad and a delegation from Malaysia made a working visit to Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) and endorsed the establishment of a university modelled after MIT. An agreement was signed in January 1997 to establish the Malaysia University of Science and Technology (MUST).

Malaysia University of Science and Technology (MUST) was established in 2000 as a postgraduate university by the MUST Ehsan Foundation (a private non-profit organization) with the assistance of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) USA. MUST helps to meet the need for high-quality graduates in the areas of science and technology by conducting full-time programmes at graduate levels in these fields.

In its formative years, MUST was fully assisted and supported by MIT, a world-renowned university noted for its education and research in advanced science and technology.

What Makes Us Special?

MUST offers postgraduate programmes that are focussed on the fields of science and technology.
MUST has highly qualified academic staff and is a research-focussed university.
MUST was established with the assistance of Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), USA - one of the world's best universities renowned for its research in science and technology.

Facilities

Lecture rooms/halls are fully-equipped with audio visual aids, including LCD projectors and laptop computers.

High-bandwidth links for data transfer and video streaming is connected to the Internet with a two megabits per second (Mbps) leased line giving high-speed access to the Internet for students and staff anytime within the campus.

Workstations and computers are installed with the latest specialised software in all of MUST's laboratories.

A wireless network serves the library and the adjacent areas. Students can connect to the network using the university's laptops or their own laptops anywhere in the areas serviced by this network.

MUST's video conferencing facilities enable communication between the campus and other external institutions or organizations. The equipment is also used on a regular basis for academic and research collaboration between MUST and MIT.

Research labs are fully-equipped for all of MUST's programmes, The Biotechnology Faculty in particular, has four labs namely, Genomics, Molecular Biology, Plant Biotechnology and Proteomics.

The MUST library is well-stocked with printed and digitised magazines, journals and books. It is equipped with computer workstations that allows students to search and locate materials as well as access certain libraries in the world through the MUST Library homepage.

MUST also nurtures a research-driven culture in all fields of expertise to ensure depth of understanding and confidence in facing practical problems. The MIT model has been the impetus of the MUST culture that is vibrant, innovative and purposive to our local environment.

INNOVATIVE PEDAGOGY

Flipped Classroom

Blending learning inside and outside the classroom Flipped learning reverses the traditional classroom approach to teaching and learning. It moves direct instruction into the learner’s own space. The classroom becomes a space for dynamic, interactive learning where the teacher guides and coaches students to apply concepts they have learned online.

Event-based learning

Event-based learning runs over a few hours or days and creates a memorable sense of occasion. The time-bounded nature of an event encourages people to learn together, its local setting supports face to face encounters between amateurs and experts, and the scale of an event can provide access to resources that would otherwise prove inaccessible.

Technology-enhanced event-based learning

Technology-enhanced event-based learning offers opportunities for participation, collaboration and distributed expertise. These events not only have the potential to engage millions of people in memorable learning experiences, but can also make significant additions to the body of knowledge available to us as a society.

EXTRAORDINARY CAMPUS EXPERIENCE

Studying and living here is an essential part of the M.U.S.T. experience.

All of MUST residence units are within a couple minutes’ walk of each other – and classes not much farther away. Along that walk, students enjoy such amenities as palm-tree terraces, cafes, vibrant vistas and shopping malls and recreation centers. Just one stroll around campus and you’ll understand why more than 80% of students live here.

MUST Campus is a vital part of one of Malaysia’s most dynamic part of Petaling Jaya city —Kelana Jaya area.

Bordered by iconic neighborhoods — Tropicana Golf And Country Resort, Subang Jaya – the Malaysia University of Sciences and Technology is strategically located between crossroads of ideas, cultures and limitless experiences and opportunities. And as a M.U.S.T. student, you’ll be given every resource and opportunity to take advantage of all that we have to offer.

IPTS berstatus Universiti Swasta menjurus Perubatan & Sains Kesihatan Siri 2

- Universiti Perubatan Antarabangsa (International Medical University - IMU)
- Universiti Perdana
- Universiti ''Asian Institute of Medical, Science & Technology'' (AIMST)
- Universiti MAHSA
- Universiti Metropolitan Asia (AMU)

Private Universities Specialised in Medical & Health Sciences Part 2

With the establishment of more private education institution in early 2000s, a number of private colleges specialised allied health sciences field started to attract enrollment from SPM school leavers who are looking for courses related to medical & health sciences. With the setting up of International Medical University (IMU), other private medical colleges which focused their strength in medical courses is being upgraded to full-fledged Universities, the likes of MAHSA group of colleges & Masterskill (now known as AMU). Private Universities that specialised with more than 70 - 90% courses offered for medical & health sciences courses become top pickings amongst SPM / STPM school leavers who didn't get enrolled to medical courses in public universities due to limited placement.

List of Private Universities Specialised in Medical & Health Sciences Part 2:

- International Medical University (IMU)
- Perdana University
- Asian Institute of Medical, Science & Technology University (AIMST)
- MAHSA Universi
- Asia Metropolitan University (AMU)

INTERNATIONAL MEDICAL UNIVERSITY (IMU)

HISTORY OF IMU

27 years ago, it was clear that Malaysia was facing a serious shortage of doctors. Dr Kamal Salih, a visionary, and Dr Mei Ling Young, a social scientist with a strong interest in development, hit on a brilliant, simple idea – if young Malaysian students could not go out into the world to get the medical education they wanted and deserved, they would bring it to them.

And so the idea for the International Medical College (IMC) was born.
Kamal and Mei Ling roped in Dr Saidi Hashim, who had helped start the Universiti Sains Malaysia (USM)’s Medical School and Professor Ong Kok Hai, also a USM colleague, to help put the plan for the school together. They in turn invited two leading medical educationists – Professor Ron Harden and Professor Ian Hart to join the team.

The six of them then put together a unique model that would see medical students spend the first 5 semesters at the International Medical College (IMC) in Kuala Lumpur, before moving to any one of the Partner Medical Schools (PMS) around the world. It was a radical idea – a world’s first – that changed the model for medical education. And in the process, helped build a better Malaysia.

The IMC curriculum was unique not just in its teaching and learning methods, but also in the fact that it was designed to be universally accepted as a Phase 1 by some of the world’s best medical schools. And its unique Self-directed Learning approach taught students to break away from teacher-dependent learning and to be responsible for their own learning.

In November 1992 – after only 2 years of intense planning and with five leading PMS on board – the IMC opened its doors to students in Jalan Selangor, Petaling Jaya.

The college was officially launched on 13 April 1992 by the then Education Minister, YB Datuk Amar Dr Sulaiman Haji Daud, demonstrating the full support of the Malaysian Ministry of Education and Ministry of Health.

Since 1993, there have been 32 cohorts of PMS students, totalling 2,519 in number. Today, IMU has 29 renowned PMS, which between them offer around 240 places a year to IMU in this exciting, innovative and transformational education model.

It also operates its own private clinics, IMU Healthcare, in areas such as Dentistry, Chiropractic and Chinese Medicine to ensure close integration of real practice with education.

Partner to the world’s prestigious universities

IMU pioneered the partner university model. It has established a strong global network of more than 29 partner institutions of higher learning. These collaborations cover most of the undergraduate programmes offered in IMU.

This reflects its historic commitment to opening doors to education and training opportunities outside Malaysia via credit transfer and twinning programmes, opportunities that would not otherwise be available to Malaysians. IMU’s diverse partner universities include universities from Australia, New Zealand, Canada, United States of America, Ireland, China and United Kingdom.

Renowned and highly experienced faculty

IMU’s lecturers are highly-qualified in their fields of expertise with extensive experience in not only academia (teaching, research and publications) but also in clinical/professional practice. Through exclusive arrangements with our Partner Universities, senior faculty members from those universities participate in yearly quality assurance reviews which ensures that IMU’s benchmarks global standards.

Some also come as visiting lecturers to teach specialised subjects on a rotational basis at IMU.

IMU learning philosophy produces competent & caring healthcare professionals.

IMU’s Learning Philosophy is grounded on its core values, which fosters students’ development into knowledgeable, competent and caring healthcare professionals who are critical thinkers, reflective and yet proactive. Active involvement in the community allow students to translate knowledge gained in classrooms into health education to the public, enhance communication skills and strengthen professional and technical skills in real world environments. All this combines to create graduates who are committed to lifelong learning and imbued with a sense of good citizenship, leadership and ethical behaviour.

Graduate ‘employment ready’ with a professional network of peers

At IMU you will have relevant clinical exposure and / or industrial placements which better prepares you to become a healthcare professional, giving you an advantage in the employment market. In addition you will study alongside a diverse population of students and practitioners from all healthcare fields. This inter-professional learning allows you to appreciate how the different fields in healthcare practice relate and complement each other, which better prepares you for employment.

You will also have the chance to develop strong friendship amongst peers that will be the foundation of an extensive professional network upon graduation which will facilitate your career development.

A Medical University with Self-Accreditation Status

In 2017, IMU is the first and only private Malaysian medical university to receive the self-accreditation status from the Malaysian Qualifications Agency (MQA). The self-accreditation status entitles a higher education provider (HEP) to accredit its programmes except for programmes that require accreditation and recognition of the relevant professional body. MQA awards the status to public universities and private campus branches based on the respective institution’s solid and reliable internal quality assurance system.

The Faculty of Pharmacy offers a 4-year BPharm (Hons) degree programme.

Faculty of Allied Health Professions (FAHP)

The Faculty of Allied Health Professions was established in 2008. Currently, the Faculty has 2 schools under its care.

- School of Nursing
- School of Physiotherapy

Initially these two schools were under the School of Allied Health Sciences in the Faculty of Medicine and Health Science. However, due to the increasing demand of the allied health courses and its intense academic activities, AIMST University has restructured some of the existing faculties, following which the Faculty of Allied Health Professions was formed to oversee the specific allied health science courses in AIMST University.

Faculty of Applied Sciences (FAS)

The Faculty has two departments, the Department of Biotechnology and the Department of Materials Science. Each department offers its own three-year degree programme with honours i.e. BSc (Hons) in Biotechnology (BT) and BSc (Hons) in Materials Technology with Management (MTM). An MSc in Biotechnology (by research) is also available.

Staff in the Faculty include not only highly experienced academics, but also well-trained younger staff, who have been recruited from various local and overseas universities as well as industry. The teaching and research programmes also draw upon expertise from other Faculties, especially the Faculty of Medicine & Health Sciences and the Faculty of Engineering & Computer Technology. In turn, FAS staff offer their services to other Faculties. Senior staff continue to maintain active research links with their previous institutions.

High-end computing facilities, which are essential to quality study and breakthrough scientific research, are well supported both at the University and at the departmental level. Some postgraduate specialist centres or laboratories are in place (e.g. the molecular biology and orchid tissue culture laboratories) while others are in the pipeline, such as a Bioinformatics Centre, a Photonics Laboratory and an Advanced Molecular Biology Laboratory.

Faculty of Engineering and Computer Technology (FECT)

The Faculty of Engineering and Computer Technology (FECT) at AIMST University offers unique opportunities for frontiering, innovative education and research. The Electrical and Electronics Engineering programmes are approved by the Ministry of Higher Education of Malaysia, and are designed according to the specifications set by the Engineering Accreditation Council (EAC) of the Board of Engineers Malaysia (BEM) and Quality Assured by the Malaysian Qualifications Agency (MQA). Similarly the Information Technology (IT) programmes are fully accreditated by MQA.

The programmes offer curricula that combine a strong theoretical background with hands-on experience in excellent labs, and focus on teamwork and communication skills.
